Hornets Silenced By Tigers 9-2
Dover, Del. (Mar. 21, 2012) --- Delaware State managed just five hits, while committing three errors and walking eight batters in a 9-2 loss to Towson at Soldier Field this afternoon.
The Hornets lost for the second time in three games to fall to 12-9-1 this season. The Tigers won their fourth straight to improve to 10-9.
Brandon Gonnella and Kurt Wertz drove in two runs each, while Ryne Willard had three hits in five at bats to lead the Tigers' 12-hit attack.
Starter Mike Ryan (1-0) pitched three shutout innings to earn the win for Towson. Ryan allowed two hits and struck out three. DSU starter Elliott Gardner (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six hits and three runs in three innings.

NSU Breaks 20-Year Drought vs. Tribe, Wins 3-1 in Weather-Delayed Game
NORFOLK, Va. - Behind a clutch pitching effort and two RBI from Cameron Day, Norfolk State broke a 20-year drought against William & Mary, topping the Tribe 3-1 on Wednesday evening at Marty L. Miller Field.
Chris Horne picked up his first win as a Spartan, matching his season high with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings of relief work. Day and Justin Lee each had a pair of hits to help the Spartans (6-12) break a 25-game losing streak to the Tribe (15-8) dating to 1992. The victory was also NSU's fifth straight over the last nine days.
Horne (1-2) allowed six hits and one run in 5.1 innings and did not walk a batter. Salter earned his first career save by recording the final two outs. The trio of Di Fulgo, Horne and Salter did not issue a walk and fanned nine.
Matt Houston (1-1) took the loss for the Tribe, allowing two hits and one run in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Stephen Arcure and Ryan Brown had two hits each for W&M, which out-hit the Spartans 9-6. Day went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Lee was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Spartans.

North Florida Tops Bethune-Cookman, 4-2, with Big Fourth Inning
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite a strong defensive effort from the Wildcats, Wednesday night at Harmon Field, North Florida was able to pull out the 4-2 win on the strength of a single big inning.
The Wildcats were able to score early, putting up the game's first run in the second inning as Brashad Johnson got the 'Cats going with a triple straight down the right baseline into the corner, setting him up perfectly for Anthony Stokes' sacrifice fly in right.
Josh Johnson pulled back from a bunting approach to fire a liner up the middle in the third for an RBI as Nick Johnson crossed the plate for the 2-0 lead.
The Ospreys worked their way back to even with a pair of RBI in the bottom of the fourth, but took the lead on a big two-out, two-run Alex Bacon home run to the left field sign to take the 4-2 lead.
Starter Montana Durapau (0-4) threw a solid game, and bounced back from the fourth, pitching three more innings with only one hit. He collected two strikeouts with no walks before giving way to Bryan Rivera in the eighth. Rivera threw one frame with one K and no hits.

Hawks Earn First Win Of The Season With 7-1 Victory Over NCCU
DURHAM, N.C. - In the battle of the Maroon and Grey, UMES took down North Carolina Central 7-1 in Durham for its first win of the year. The Hawks go to 1-19 while the Eagles go to 3-19 after this non-conference matchup.
In the top of the second, Brandon Schott reached second on an error by the left fielder. Jeffrey Fleetwood was walked by Eagles starter Glenn Frye (1-4) two batters later to put runners on first and second with two outs. Joshua James singled to score Schott and give UMES a 1-0 lead.
UMES came on strong in the third against reliever Jasper Jones, with Stephen Bull and Byron Campbell drawing leadoff walks. James Newsome doubled down the left field line, getting an RBI with another run off an error by the left fielder. Two batters later, Tre-von Johnson doubled to left-center to score Newsome, capping a three-run inning and putting UMES up 4-0.
The Hawks were not done as in the next inning, Shaquille Bagwell led off with a single, advancing to second on the next at bat. Campbell followed up with an RBI single to center to score Bagwell. Campbell stole second and scored two batters later after Schott reached on an error by the shortstop. UMES led 6-0 by the end of the fourth.
In his first start of the season, Bernard Parker (1-0) kept the Eagles down, allowing just two hits in his five-inning start with four strikeouts. His scoreless outing dropped his ERA to 3.95.
NCCU got a run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Luis Diaz as Tyson Simpson reached on an error by the left fielder with two outs, giving the Eagles their only score of the game.
Fleetwood tacked on a run in the top of the ninth for UMES, hitting an RBI single to right to score Johnson, returning the lead to six runs and setting the eventual final score, 7-1 Hawks.
Frye got the loss for NCCU, allowing a run in the first two innings with two strikeouts. Jones allowed five runs in the third and fourth combined, striking out one. Nate Smith led the Eagles with a 2-for-4 game.
