MEAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., March 13, 2012-  Delaware State sophomore Ryan Haas earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Tuesday. North Carolina A&T's Esterlin Paulino was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman's Juan Pizarro earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Haas (1B/P, 6-0, So., 200, Bear, Del.) batted .417 with eight hits in 17 appearances.  He posted two doubles and four RBI to aid the Hornets to a 4-0 mark last week. Defensively, he added 21 assists. Haas earned a win at the mound in a 10-6 victory against Delaware. He allowed four hits and three runs while striking out four in 5.1 innings.

Paulino (P, 5-7, Sr., 170, Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico) allowed six hits and two walks to earn a 0.00 ERA in a 6-2 conference win over North Carolina Central. The senior struck out six of 28 batters in seven innings.

Pizarro (P/2B, 6-1, Fr., 195, Bayamon, Puerto Rico) hit .667 with one double and two RBI in a 6-3 conference win against Florida A&M.  He added two putouts and four assists in a defensive effort.

Other Top Performers:

Shaquille Bagwell (UMES) hit .400 (4-of-10) with one double, six assists and seven putouts in three games for the Hawks. 

Luis Diaz (NCCU) led his team with a .364 batting average, including one double and two RBI.

Gavin Guarerra (NCCU) earned back-to-back saves to guide the Eagles to a conference sweep of North Carolina A&T.


Ben Jarboe (CSU) pitched a complete game against Long Island, allowing seven hits and striking out five batters.  

Zachary Saca (UMES) struck out four of 17 batters and allowed just two hits in four innings of play for the Hawks.

Chad Sturgeon (DSU) recorded a 3-0 mark with an ERA of 0.00 in 2.2 innings for the Hornets.

Luke Tendler (NCAT)
was 8-of-17 with two doubles and six RBI in four games for the Aggies.
