Delaware State Falls to Savannah State

Aaron Nardone smacked a grand slam and Elliott Gardner tossed a complete game to lift Delaware State to a 6-2 win over Savannah State in the series finale at Tiger Field this afternoon.

The Hornets took three of four games in the series to improve to 3-4 on the season. Savannah State is also 3-4 after the loss.
Delaware State led 1-0 when Dan Percell singled with one out in the third inning. Joey Babuca followed with a single and JP Frey reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Nardone followed with a smash down the right field line for a grand slam to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.

DSU scored its first run when Troy Drummond led off the game with a double and later scored on a Savannah State throwing error.

The Hornets scored their final run when Scott Davis singled in Nardone with one out in the fifth.

Gardner allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out six to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Nardone also had a triple and single to go 3-for-5 at the plate, while Babuca had three hits in four at bats.

Eagles Rally Falls Short Against Longwood

Freshman Zach Hawk had four hits and drove in two runs, but a late Coppin State rally came up short as the Eagles dropped a 6-5 decision to Longwood on Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium.

The victory enabled Longwood (5-2) to compete the three-game sweep of Coppin State.

Coppin State (0-6) fell behind early, but staged a late rally and had the winning run on base in the ninth inning.

The Eagles held an early 2-1 lead, but Longwood scored a combined five runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead.

The Eagles began their comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning.

John Walls singled to center field to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Hawk lined a single to right to trim the lead to 6-3.

In the eighth inning, Myles Taylor had a one-out double and scored when Jordan Ellis singled to right field cutting the lead to 6-4. Ellis moved up to second on a wild pitch and moved to third when Ian Arciaga followed with a base hit. Longwood reliever Ryan Schubert worked out of the jam by getting a strikeout and a lineout to end the inning.

Hawk beat out an infield hit to get things started in the ninth inning. After a strikeout, Jesse Savage singled to left which advanced Hawk to second.

After a lineout, Taylor kept the inning alive with a single to center that scored Hawk and brought the Eagles to within 6-5. Schubert was able to strikeout the final batter to secure the victory for Longwood.

Tyler Wislocki picked up the win for Longwood, while Madison Neddo took the loss for Coppin State.
