Ostapeck, Wildcats Edge NSU in Another Nail-Biter, 1-0

NORFOLK, Va. - Stephen Ostapeck tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout to help Villanova win its second one-run game in as many days over Norfolk State, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Wildcats are now 2-3, while NSU dropped its fifth straight to fall to 1-5.

For the second straight day, two right handers engaged in a pitchers' duel at Marty L. Miller Field. Saturday it was Ostapeck and NSU sophomore Justin Bhatti. Bhatti was masterful, striking out a career-high 11 hitters and allowing just five hits and keeping VU off the board until the eighth - just as teammate Jordan Egan did Friday. But for the second straight day, Wildcats' second baseman Tyler Sciacca came up big in the eighth inning, delivering a two-out RBI single to give his team the lead.

Bhatti and Ostapeck matched each other with scoreless frames through the seventh. But with one out in the eighth, Bhatti walked B.J. Bochicchio. VU then executed a hit-and-run, with Matt Fleishman singling Bochicchio to third. Bochicchio was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, but Fleishman scored from second on Sciacca's second go-ahead single in as many days.

Ostapeck (1-0) allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out three for the Wildcats. Bhatti, who pitched 14 scoreless innings to start the season, dropped to 1-1 on the year. Bhatti and junior Chris Horne, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts, combined to fan 14 hitters.

Fleishman (2-for-4) and Sciacca (2-for-3) combined for four of the Wildcats' five hits. Ryan Montgomery was 2-for-3 to lead NSU, which tallied four hits.

Bethune-Cookman Capitalizes on USF Miscues to Take Game 2, 7-3

TAMPA, Fla. - In game two of the series with South Florida on Saturday, the Wildcats turned the tables on the Bulls, earning the 7-3 win at USF Baseball Stadium. Bethune-Cookman took advantage of USF miscues and opportunities, while making the most of solid hitting and pitching to even up the series.

After missing out on timely hitting in the series opener, the Wildcats went right to work in game two, with Josh Johnson leading off for B-CU with a base hit over the middle, shortly batted in by Brashad Johnson on a casual-looking RBI double straight double the outfield line in left.

After three straight full defense-heavy innings, Carlos Delgado led off the Wildcats in the seventh, breaking the game open with an RBI single through the right side, followed by Taylor and Delgado scoring on consecutive wild pitches.

In the ninth, J. Johnson put the cherry on top, rounding out the scoring with a shot just over the inside of the first base bag, staying fair down the right field line for an RBI double, taking the Wildcat lead to 7-3.

Starter Gabriel Hernandez (1-1) earned the win after throwing six solid innings, collecting six strikeouts, with just two walks, and allowing two earned runs. The loss went to USF starter Andrew Barbosa (0-1). Hernandez was relieved in the seventh by Scott Garner, who allowed no hits, and Jairo Acevedo wrapped the final two frames with only one hit.

Nick Johnson led the way on offense for B-CU, hitting 2-3, while Jordan Taylor was 2-5 with two RBI, and Josh Johnson was 2-5 with one RBI.
