Wildcats Take #1 Florida to the Wire in 8-6 Loss in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The Wildcats came to Gator country with the nation's top team in their sights, and nearly hit their target, outhitting #1 Florida at McKethan Stadium. After B-CU held a lead as late as the seventh, UF pushed ahead and contained the Wildcats in the final two frames for the 8-6 win in dramatic fashion.
The lead changed hands four times before ending up in the Gators' final grasp.
The Wildcats made the initial strike, getting on the board first with an RBI triple down the right field line by Alejandro Sanchez early in the first inning. B-CU scored in four innings, matching strikes with the Gators and leaving very little breathing room for UF, outhitting the Gators, 14-13.
The Wildcats displayed their biggest hitting game of the early season, including Sanchez' first triple of the year, and Brashad Johnson recording not only his, but B-CU's first jack of the year; a smooth shot to the left field seats.
On top of that, B-CU received a pleasant surprise from freshman designated hitter Jordan Taylor, who hit 4-of-5 to lead the team, including a two-RBI double in the seventh to give B-CU their last lead.
Maddox (1-0) had two K's and earned the win, while B-CU's Gabriel Hernandez (0-1) took the loss.
Behind Taylor's performance, Nick Johnson and Brashad Johnson both hit 2-5, while all starters collected at least one hit for the Wildcats, and five earned RBI.
Florida was led by catcher Mike Zunino, who hit two home runs. With one to left and one to right, each tied the game at crucial times in the second and seventh.
