Hawks Fall To Gardner-Webb 7-0
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Despite eight hits by UMES in the game, the Hawks were shut out by Gardner-Webb 7-0 to finish the three-game series on Saturday. The Hawks fall to 0-3 while the Bulldogs go to 3-0.
Gardner-Webb got on the board in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, John Harris hit a three-run triple into the left-center gap. He scored the next at bat as Brad Collins reached on error, giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs struck again in the second as Danny Yelverton scored on a pop up error with Adam McFarland batting, pushing the Bulldogs advantage to five runs.
Tyler Witte (0-1) started on the mound, throwing a scoreless third, fourth and fifth inning before allowing an unearned run in the sixth after a ground out from Benji Jackson scored Ryan Allen for a 6-0 Gardner Webb lead. Witte finished with 5.2 innings thrown with six runs allowed, only three of them earned, with a strikeout.
The home team scored again in the seventh with a Collins RBI triple to score Harris to put Gardner-Webb up 7-0.
UMES had runners in scoring position in five of its nine innings, but were defeated by the Bulldogs in the end.

FGCU Claims Final Innings, 7-3 Win Over B-CU
FT. MYERS, Fla. - Wildcat baseball moved to 1-1 on the year as Florida Gulf Coast scored runs in four consecutive innings to down B-CU, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium. Timely hitting proved to be the key to the loss as the Eagles broke early deadlock to control the final innings.
Defense was the word in the first half of the game, with the teams combining for just three hits through the first four innings.
In the fifth inning, the Wildcats were the first to strike, with Jairo Acevedo leading off the inning by firing a speeder at the third baseman to reach base, batted in two hitters later by a Brandon Turner shot up the middle.
The Eagles were quick to respond, using sacrifice flies to first earn the tie in the bottom of the fifth and a one-run lead in the sixth.
In the seventh, Turner collected another RBI, laying down a sac bunt to tie the game at two, as Carlos Delgado crossed the plate. Brashad Johnson gave the Wildcats the upper hand, briefly, with a powerful double straight down the left field line to bring Josh Johnson home for the 3-2 lead.
The Eagles came to life offensively at just the right time for their cause, scoring two runs in the bottom half, and putting the game away in the eighth on three runs, highlighted by FGCU shortstop Alex Diaz' (hit 2-3 with 3 RBI) leadoff homer in the seventh, and two-RBI double in the eighth.
Turner led the Wildcats offensively, hitting 2-4 with 2 RBI and one sacrifice bunt.

Hornets' Rally Falls Short In Opener Of Sweep By UNC Greensboro
Dover, Del. (Feb. 18, 2012) --- Delaware State rallied from a three-run deficit before falling on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth inning in the opener of a doubleheader at North Carolina-Greensboro this afternoon.
The Spartans (3-0) completed the doubleheader and series sweep with a 13-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Hornets trailed 4-1 before scoring a run in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to tie the game.
Delaware State (0-3) opened the game one scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Troy Drummond led off the game with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by Peter Broehl and moved to third on a ground out by Cameron Cecil. Ryan Haas followed with a single to center to score Drummond.
UNCG tied the game when Trevor Edwards led off the second inning with a homer to right field. The Spartans scored an unearned run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
UNCG opened up a 3-1 lead with a run on a Delaware State error in the fourth, and pulled ahead 4-1 on a solo homer by Kris Richards in the fifth.
Delaware State began its comeback with a run in the top of the seventh to pull to within 4-2. Haas walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out single by Eddie Sorondo.
The Hornets tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth. The rally began with a one-out walk to Drummond. The next batter two batters, Broehl and Cecil, were hit by pitches to load the bases. Haas followed with a single through the right side, scoring Drummond and Broehl to tie the game at 4-4.
UNCG reliever Dominique Vattuone struck out the next two batters to prevent further damage in the inning by the Hornets.
Haas was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in for DSU.

UNCG loaded the bases with one out in its half of ninth when Christian Wolfe's infield single off Hornet reliever Chad Sturgeon brought in the winning run.
Reliever Tommy Dill (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets, while Vattuone was the winning pitcher for UNCG.
In the nightcap, UNCG racked out 19 hits, including four home runs. Zach Leach had two homers and six RBI to lead the Spartans.
The Spartans scored two runs in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth to open up an 11-0 lead.
Delaware State avoided a shutout when Sorondo scored on a fielder's choice by Nick Arrue in the top of the ninth.
Aaron Nardone was 3-for-4 with a triple and Broehl had two hits in four at-bats in game two for the Hornets.

Aggies Split With Navy
GREENSBORO-With the forecast calling for extensive rain for Sunday, the North Carolina A&T Aggies played a doubleheader against Navy on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium to finish up their three-game series. The Aggies (1-2) split the day with the Midshipmen (2-1), winning Game 1 by a 7-2 final, and dropping Game 2, 11-4.
The Aggies had strong pitching in the first game, and got their offense rolling in the second half of the contest, posting five runs in the final three innings to secure the win. The Aggies got within one at 5-4 in the series finale before the Midshipmen broke the game open for six runs in the seventh inning.
RHP sophomore Tyler Boone turned in an outstanding performance for the Aggies in the first game, which was his second career start. His last start was on May 14, 2011, and he allowed five runs on three hits in 2.2 innings at Savannah State. On Saturday, Boone allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in 8.0 innings.
RHP Andrew Cook, who transferred from Lenoir Community College, made his A&T debut after Boone, and tossed one shutout inning of relief with a strikeout.
Redshirt junior catcher Eric Chiz started in the first game, and finished 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI in his first game since May 16, 2009. Chiz was out the last two seasons due to injury.
Navy scored first in the series finale as well.
LHP Brent Moore started the game for the Aggies, and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Navy tagged him for four runs in the second inning, as they collected four hits.
But then he settled down and did not give up a run until the fifth inning, when Greg Bryant scored as Brandon Beans grounded out to take a 5-0 lead.
The Aggies collected four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-4 contest. Third baseman Mark Nales was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Catcher Stefan Jordan reached on an error by Navy third baseman Greg Dupell to put two runners on with no out. Andre McKoy then laid down a bunt and made it safely to first to advance both runners. With the bases loaded, Carvell Copeland struck out. Riley stepped up to the plate and hit the ball to the second baseman, Greg Bryant. Bryant made a fielder's choice, put he failed to put out McKoy at second. Nales scored on the play. With the bases still loaded and two out, Navy starter Zach Sipe walked Little and Freeman to score two more runs. Reggie Washington then struck swinging but reached first on a wild pitch. Riley scored the fourth and final A&T run on the play.
