NSU's Egan Named to Coastal Plain League All-Star Game

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State pitcher Jordan Egan has been selected to play in next week's Coastal Plain League All-Star Game.

Egan is pitching this summer for the Edenton (N.C.) Steamers of the CPL, widely regarded as one of the top collegiate summer leagues in the country with 15 teams based in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Egan is 2-0 with one save and a sparkling 1.23 earned-run average for the Steamers (29-9), who own the best record in the CPL and won the first-half Northern Division title. Egan is two-thirds of an inning pitched shy of qualifying for the league lead in ERA. At his current pace of 1.23, Egan would rank second in the league in that category.

Egan has made 17 appearances this summer, 16 in relief. He did not allow an earned run in his first 14 appearances out of the Edenton bullpen, spanning 19 innings of work. Despite having that streak snapped last week, Egan bounced back with a dominant effort in his first start of the season Monday night. He held the Peninsula Pilots to one run on just four hits in seven innings of work, fanning a season-high seven hitters in earning the victory.

For the summer to date, Egan has allowed just 16 hits and four earned runs in 29.1 innings pitched. He has fanned 27 hitters and is allowing an opponents' batting average of just .158.

Egan and five of his Steamer teammates were selected as members of the National Team in the All-Star Game next Monday at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C. For more information, visit www.coastalplain.com.

As a sophomore for NSU in 2011, Egan went 3-3 with two saves and a 4.78 ERA, spending part of the year in the weekend rotation before serving primarily as the team's closer later in the season. He struck out 81 batters in 69.2 innings last season, ranking 22nd in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (10.5).
