Norfolk State third baseman Ryan Montgomery and outfielder John Rasberry were named Tuesday to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Baseball University Division Second Team, the organization announced.
Montgomery, who just completed his sophomore season in the spring, was third on the Spartans and seventh in the MEAC with a .362 batting average. He doubled 10 times, tripled three times and knocked in 25 runs, all despite starting the season outside of the Spartans' lineup. Montgomery, who started 41 of the team's 53 games, was also named to the All-MEAC First Team and was voted to the MEAC All-Tournament Team earlier in the year.
Rasberry, who just completed his Spartan career in the spring, led NSU and was fourth in the MEAC with a .372 batting average. The All-MEAC First Team and MEAC All-Tournament Team selection had seven doubles, two triples, four home runs and 39 runs batted in. Rasberry also stole 11 bases in 12 attempts and posted a .470 on-base percentage, fifth-best in the MEAC.
Of the 12 Division I schools whose players were eligible for the VaSID University Division team, NSU had the fourth-most honorees, trailing U.Va. (7), JMU (5) and Radford (3).
James Madison catcher Jake Lowery was selected the VaSID State Player of the Year. Danny Hultzen and Brian O'Connor, both of College World Series participant Virginia, were named Pitcher and Coach of the Year, respectively. VCU's Bill Cullen was voted Rookie of the Year.
