Aggies Complete Sweep of Coppin State

GREENSBORO - N.C. A&T completed a three-game sweep of Coppin State on Sunday with a 9-1 win at War Memorial Stadium. It was career win No. 300 for Aggies head coach Keith Shumate.

Freeman led the Aggies with three hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Luke Tendler and Mark Nales went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Aggies also honored lone senior Nick Oelker, who pitched a masterful game on Saturday. On Sunday, it was Brent Moore's turn. He gave up just one run over 6 2/3 innings, while striking out four in 98 pitches thrown. The Aggies gave him all the offense he would need in the second and third innings.

Tendler's double down the right field line led to an RBI double from Nales to give the Aggies their first run. Stefan Jordan followed with an RBI single and later moved to third on a throwing error. The miscue led to an RBI single by Freeman to give N.C. A&T a 3-0 advantage.

Marquis Riley put another double on the board for the Aggies in the third. It was complemented by another Tendler RBI single. Tendler stole second, which set the table for Dairio Little's RBI single for a 5-0 lead.

On the mound, Moore had command of his pitches. He did walk four batters, but most of those came in the seventh when he walked in the Eagles only run. Sixty-one of the 98 pitches he threw were strikes as he improved to 3-7 on the season. Jim Vagnier (0-11) took the loss.

The Aggies (18-29, 8-8) still have four games remaining before the tournament. Coppin State dropped to 5-39 overall and 2-16 in the MEAC.

Rasberry leads Norfolk State Past Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - John Rasberry hit a three-run double to highlight Norfolk State's six-run second inning, and the Spartans rode a solid start from freshman Justin Bhatti to earn a 10-3 win over Florida A&M on Sunday in the rubber game of their MEAC series at Moore-Kittles Field.

The win improves the Spartans' record to 19-26 overall, 9-8 in the MEAC. FAMU falls to 17-35, 6-12.

Neither team scored in the first, but NSU quickly loaded the bases with just one out in the second. Sammy Serafine (Chesapeake, Va.) singled, Cameron Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) reached on an error and TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) walked. John Lynch then knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, but FAMU did not record an out on the play, leaving the bases loaded. Rasberry followed by ripping a David Duncan offering down the left-field line to clear the bases.

Brandon Hairston then singled in Rasberry, and Hairston later scored after a pair of wild pitches by Duncan to make it 6-0.

NSU padded its lead to 8-0 in the third as Serafine tripled in Tyon Ore (Norfolk, Va.). Griffin then knocked in Serafine with a groundout.

The Spartans all but put the game away with two more runs in the fifth. Parsons singled with two outs. Griffin followed with an RBI triple, and Griffin scored on a throwing error by the FAMU outfield at the end of the play to make it 10-0.

That was plenty for Bhatti (2-6), who held FAMU scoreless until the seventh. The Rattlers narrowly averted losing in seven innings by the 10-run rule as Tobi Adeyemi hit a two-out, two-run single off Bhatti, ending the freshman right hander's day. Adeyemi and Adam Decker then executed a double steal of second and home to get FAMU within 10-3.

Bhatti, who also threw three scoreless innings of relief in Wednesday's loss at VCU, pitched 6.2 innings on Sunday. He allowed seven hits and three runs, walking two and striking out six. Raymond Morton pitched the final 2.1 innings and struck out three.

Hairston and Serafine led NSU with two hits apiece. Griffin went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Parsons and Serafine also scored two times each.

Duncan (3-6) took the loss for the Rattlers. He yielded seven hits and 10 runs, seven of them earned, in five innings of work. Adeyemi (3-for-4, two RBI) had three of FAMU's seven hits.

Bethune-Cookman Tops Delaware State 9-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Wildcats swept Delaware State and finished the MEAC regular season with another perfect 18-0 record, Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Wildcats used three big innings to push past the Hornets, coming away with the 9-4 victory on Senior Day.

Though the Wildcats were quiet offensively in the first inning, the Hornets couldn't keep them silent for long, as B-CU moved on top quickly in the bottom of the second.

Nick Johnson crossed home plate for the first Wildcat score in the second frame, on a Brashad Johnson sacrifice fly to center. Matt Wright made it two straight for the Wildcats on a huge triple down the right field line, beating the tag at third. The 'Cats went for three and then four with infield RBI fired through to the outfield by Alejandro Sanchez and Ryan Durrence, taking an early four-run lead.

Sanchez picked up another with his second home run in the series, squarely hitting the scoreboard in left field to lead off the fourth inning. The 'Cats picked up two more in the fourth as DJ Leonard batted in one run and Nick Johnson put an RBI single to center.

In the fifth, after center fielder David Lee stole two bases, Sanchez got after it again, picking up his third RBI, hitting a hard shot up the middle to send Lee to the plate. Emmanuel Castro collected an RBI to wrap up the scoring in the fifth, comfortably leading the Hornets by eight.

The Hornets battled to climb back in the game, adding to their first run scored in the third, with two in the sixth and another in the top of the eighth, but the B-CU defense held strong and quelled the comeback attempt. With senior Chris Anselmo wrapping up the game in the ninth, the Wildcats locked in the 9-4 victory and clinched back-to-back perfect 18-0 seasons, a program and MEAC first.

Starter Patrick Goelz (7-3) turned in a solid performance in five innings on the hill, collecting his team-best sixth MEAC victory of the season with four strikeouts and just one run. The Wildcats utilized all four of their senior pitchers in putting away the Hornets, wrapping up with Anselmo to send the sweep final.

Alejandro Sanchez had a monster day, going 3-3 with three RBI, including his second homer of the weekend. Sanchez wrapped up the series hitting 6-10 with six RBI. Ryan Durrence hit 2-4 with an RBI, while Nick Johnson, Brashad Johnson, and Matt Wright each went 1-3 with an RBI apiece. In all, six different Wildcats batted in runs on the day.

The win takes the Wildcats to consecutive 18-0 MEAC seasons and 32-20 on the year, while continuing an NCAA all-time best 43-game win streak over conference opponents.
