The Hawks had a lead late in game one plus had an early lead in the second contest against Mount St. Mary's, but UMES fell on the road in each end of the twinbill. The Hawks fell in game one 7-4 and game two 13-2, both in seven innings.
In game one, UMES got on the board in the first inning. With second and third with two out, Byron Campbell reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brandon Scott, allowing Tre-Von Johnson and Luis Mena in session for a quick 2-0 lead.
The Mount responded quickly in the next half inning, connecting an RBI double by Nick Walker followed two batters later by a Kyle Kane sacrifice fly off Zachary Saca to tie the game at two.
Saca held down the home team in the bottom of the second, however in the bottom of the third Tommy Flynn led off with a home run to right to give the Mount their first lead 3-2.
UMES's response was quick in the top of the fourth. With two out and a man on second, Shaquille Bagwell doubled into the right-center gap to bring home Jeffrey Fleetwood and tie the game. Next batter, Johnson copied the previous plate appearance with a two-bagger to right-center to score Bagwell and give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.
The Hawks kept the lead through the next two innings, with Saca keeping the Mount to just four batters in the fourth and fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth however, Mount St. Mary's once again led off with a home run to right, a solo shot by Shane Eyler, to tie the contest 4-4. The Mount threatened later in the inning with the bases loaded, but Bernard Parker induced a ground out to the pitcher from Walker to end the inning with a tie score.
But after the Hawks were held scoreless in the seventh, the Mount sealed the game with a three-run home run by Mark Quaranta to win game one 7-4.
Dan Horner took the win for the Mount in game one to improve to 2-3 on the season after pitching 3.1 innings of relief. Parker fell to 0-2 on the year.
Into the second game, With Matt Witte on the hill, two out and a man on third, Quaranta hit a ground ball to short. An odd hop in the grass made it difficult to field for James Newsome , allowing Tommy Flynn to score to go Mount St. Mary's an early 1-0 lead.
The deficit would not last long as UMES got the bases loaded with one out in the top of the second. Brent Lewis hit a deep ball to left, getting a sacrifice fly to bring in Nick Wiggins to tie the game.
After Witte got through the bottom of the second, the Hawks got their first lead of the game in the next half-inning. After Johnson led off with a double and Newsome pushed him to third on a ground out, Mena hit an infield single to short for an RBI and give UMES a 2-1 lead.
The Mount came back in the bottom of the third. With first and second and one out, Eyler hit a double into right-center against Jacob Foreman to bring across two runs. Eyler would come home the next batter on a ground out by Tom Healy. Mount St. Mary's would bring home six more runs, capped by a Walker three-run home run, to go up 9-2.
UMES held off the Mount for any further damage until the bottom of the sixth when Michael Foster hit a grand slam to right field, giving Mount St. Mary's a 13-2 advantage.
For the second game, the win went to the Mount starter Max Brittenham, who goes to 4-5 on the year after throwing the first five innings. Foreman receives the loss to go to 2-9 after pitching the third and fourth frames.
