MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament: Day Three

The MEAC continues its baseball championship tournament on Friday with two games in the loser's bracket and a semifinal game in the winner's portion of the bracket.

Game Seven: #2 Delaware State 3, #3 North Carolina A&T 2

Ryan Hass drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly to lead Delaware State past North Carolina A&T 3-2 in the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) Basketball Championship tournament elimination game Friday morning at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Hornets advanced to take on either the defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats or Norfolk State Spartans tonight at 6 p.m. North Carolina A&T concludes their season at 21-34.

With the scored tied at one-all, North Carolina A&T took the lead once again on a double by Xavier Macklin in the top of the fourth inning.

Delaware State tied the game again in the fifth on a two-out single by Troy Drummond. The hit scored Keith Hernandez, who walked with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Hornets scored the go-ahead run when Justin Allen crossed the plate on the sacrifice fly by Haas in the last of the seventh inning. Allen was pinch running for Peter Broehl, who singled to lead off the inning.

Elliott Gardner (5-7) pitched a four-hit complete game with 10 strikeouts and one walk in the victory.

Craig Erskine (2-7 suffered the loss despite allowing just three hits in eight innings.

Game Eight: #1 Bethune-Cookman 8, #4 Norfolk State 0 

The defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats advanced to tomorrow's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship finale with an 8-0 victory against Norfolk State Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats (34-22) will vie for their sixth consecutive and 13th overall MEAC title tomorrow at 2 p.m.  They await the winner of today's 6 p.m. matchup between Delaware State and Norfolk State in the double-elimination bracket.

The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the 4-0 lead. Brashad Johnson scored in the fourth for B-CU off a Matt Wright triple down the rightfield line.  Wright extended the lead to 6-0 off an Alejandro Sanchez single.

DJ Leonard pushed the score further with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the Wildcats scored their final run in the seventh to advance to tomorrow's championship game.

2011 MEAC Pitcher and Rookie of the Year Scott Garner (8-2) pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out four batters while only walking one.  

NSU's Richie Salter (2-2) allowed seven hits, six runs and six unearned runs in the loss.

Game Nine: #4 Norfolk State 9, #2 Delaware Staet 3

The Norfolk State Spartans split two games on Friday and avoided elimination to advance to the championship game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship Tournament at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Spartans (24-28), who made their last championship appearance in 2008, will compete for their first-ever MEAC baseball title tomorrow against the defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at 2 p.m.  

Scott Davis, the MEAC Player of the Year, got the Hornets on the board first with two RBI to score both Troy Drummond and Keith Hernandez in the top of the first.

NSU answered back at the bottom of the frame with three runs. They extended their lead with two in the fourth and another three in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead up to 9-2.  

Delaware State scored one additional run in the ninth off an Eddie Sorondo RBI for the 9-3 final.

Nine Spartans contributed hits in the victory. John Rasberry led the way going 2-of-3 with 4 RBI.

Davis was 2-of-4 for the Hornets.

Justin Bhatti (3-6) pitched a complete game and allowed four hits, three runs and three earned runs.

Ryan Haas (3-1) took the loss allowing eight hits, four runs in two innings.
