Game 4: Maryland Eastern Shore 11, Florida A&M 6
Maryland Eastern Shore eliminated Florida A&M with a 11-6 victory in the double-elimination bracket of the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship tournament, Thursday morning at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla.
With the win, fifth-seeded UMES (9-40) advances to play No. 3 North Carolina A&T tomorrow at 6 p.m. The loss for the Florida A&M Rattlers ends their season at 17-40.
UMES took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Nick Wiggins recorded an RBI single to left to get the Hawks on the board. Shaquille Bagwell and Tre-Von Johnson followed with RBI singles in the frame.
Florida A&M got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Jimmie Terrell led off with a double to the wall in left, moving to second on a fly ball. Jackson Cannon collected an RBI base hit to center off UMES starter Foreman.
The Rattlers rallied to tie the game in the third with two runs on a hit and an error but UMES retook the lead with four runs in the top of the fourth.
Luis Mena launched a two-out three-run homer to left field off FAMU starter Heath Blackburn (1-10) to make it a 7-3 game.
The Hawks added three more in the sixth to open a 10-3 advantage. Johnson singled and scored in the eighth to extend the lead to 11-3 before the Rattlers mounted a three-run ninth-inning rally off UMES relievers Sean Woods and Karim Gonzalez to end the game with the 11-6 final.
Jacob Foreman (3-9) pitched eight innings allowing two earned runs, while Johnson and Luis Mena batted a combined 9-for-9 with six runs scored.
Blackburn took the loss on the mound for FAMU, surrendering seven runs - all earned - on 12 hits in four innings.
Terrell led the Rattlers, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
Game 5: Norfolk State Defeats Delaware State 11-1 to Advance in MEAC Tourney
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 19, 2011- No. 4 Norfolk State advanced past No. 2 Delaware State 11-1 in the winner's bracket of the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship tournament Thursday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
NSU (23-27) will meet the defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship finale.
John Lynch got the Spartans on the board first on a Chris Joyce sacrifice fly. NSU scored three more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-0.
Delaware State (25-28), the second seed in the tournament, scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Troy Drummond hit a RBI single to score Brandon Crist.
Chris Warren led the way for the Spartans and finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Ryan Shook (4-3) allowed just one unearned run in seven innings. He struck out nine batters and walked six in the win.
Matt McClain (4-8) took the loss after allowing nine hits and six runs in 6.2 innings.
Game 6: North Carolina A&T 11, Maryland Eastern Shore 1
North Carolina A&T sent 10 players to the plate in the second inning, and Nick Oelker struck out eight in a 11-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament elimination game at Jackie Robinson Park.
The Aggies (21-33) advanced to face Delaware State Friday morning at 10 a.m. Delaware State lost to Norfolk State earlier in the day.
North Carolina A&T scored 10 of their 11 runs over the first three innings. Three extra base hits and two UMES errors in the second inning led to six of the Aggies' runs. Luke Tendler led the Aggies by going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Stefan Jordan added three hits for North Carolina A&T.
Oelker (8-3) pitched eight solid innings, gave up one run and surrendered just three hits. Elliott Alston led the Hawks with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI. UMES' season comes to an end at 9-41. Tyler Witte (1-9) took the loss.
