MONTGOMERY, Ala. (April 5) - Alabama State held off Florida A&M as they scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning to hand the Rattlers a 12-11 loss in extra innings, Tuesday afternoon at the ASU Baseball Complex.
Both FAMU (10-23) and ASU (11-14) finished with 14 hits each.
The Rattler were led by both Tobi Adeyemi and Jimmie Terrell who both finished with three hits each, while Jourdan Mott and Gerald Washington each recorded three hits apiece for the Hornets.
Ron James (1-0) picked the win for the ASU as he pitched two and one-third innings giving up two hits and striking out one in relief, while Stephen Dollar received the loss for FAMU as he gave up two hits, two earned runs and striking out two in two and two-thirds innings of relief.
The Hornets took advantage of an FAMU infielder's error to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as both Drew Quinney and Reginald Mitchell scored on the Rattler error.
In the top of the third inning, FAMU would take a 3-2 lead as Cory Franklin hit into a double play scoring Adam Decker. Reginald Grant would then score on a Jarryd Reid single. Then Reid would score on a Terrell single to right field.
ASU would retake the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Washington scored on an Andrew Pitts sacrifice fly to right field. Then Washington would score as James grounded out to the shortstop.
The Hornets added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Jordan Mims scored on a Pitts sacrifice fly to center field, giving ASU a 5-3 lead.
ASU increased their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Chris Davis scored on a Jourdon Mott single up the middle. Mott would then score on a Washington triple to right field. Then a Ron James single would score Washington, giving the Hornets an 8-3 lead.
FAMU would score six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead sparked by a Grant single scoring both Adam Decker and Scott.
Josue Quinones would steal home to tie the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then Hornets would then take a 10-9 lead on a Mott single scoring Davis.
Decker would knot the score at 10-10 as he scored on an ASU infielder's error in the top of the eighth inning.
Cory Franklin would give the Rattlers an 11-10 lead as he scored on wild pitch.
Chris Davis tied the game at 11-11 for the Hornets in the bottom of the ninth inning as he scored on a Washington sacrifice fly to center field to send the game into extra innings.
Quinones would give the Hornets a 12-11 win as he scored on a Washington single to left field in the bottom of the 11th inning.
