Coppin State/Norfolk State Game Suspended By Rain

BALTIMORE, Md. - Game one of Saturday's Norfolk State-Coppin State MEAC baseball doubleheader at Joe Cannon Stadium was suspended by rain and will be completed on Sunday.

The Spartans led 9-1 with one out and two runners on base in the top of the fifth inning before rain brought the game to a halt. The game will resume at that juncture on Sunday at noon, and the teams will play game two of their series following the conclusion of the first contest. The third and final game of the series is now slated to be made up on Monday, April 11, at 2 p.m.

Junior right hander Ryan Shook helped the Spartans get the series opener off to a good start. He struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits and one run in CSU's first four innings.

NSU, meanwhile, struck for three runs in the first, four in the third, and one each in the fourth and fifth innings. John Rasberry hit a two-run single and Chris Joyce an RBI single in the first. CSU got a run back on Derek Richards' RBI groundout in the bottom of the first.

In the third, Ryan Montgomery and TiQuan Griffin both hit run-scoring doubles and Sammy Serafine knocked in another with a single. Rasberry, who walked to lead off the inning, scored the first run of the frame on an Eagle error.

Chris Warren hit an RBI single in the fourth and John Lynch added one in the fifth to extend the Spartans' lead to 9-1 before the rains came.

Joyce, Griffin and Montgomery all had two hits in their first three plate appearances for NSU.

Delaware State Open MEAC Play With Split Versus UMES

Dover, Del. --- Jordan Elliott and Derek Mashallsea combined on a seven-hit shutout and Ryan Haas had three hits and two runs batted in to lead Delaware State to 6-0 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first game of a doubleheader at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Hawks won the second game 6-5 in a seven inning affair.

In the opener, Elliott (4-3) allowed four hits while striking out six in seven innings to earn the win. Marshallsea gave up three hits and struck out two in two innings of relief.

The game was scoreless until Delaware State put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cameron Cecil drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Joey Babuca knocked in the second run on a bad hop single.

Haas and Keith Hernandez each produced a run on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead.

Delaware State capped off the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Haas drove in his second run of the game on a single and Aaron Nardone had a run-scoring double in the inning.

Nardone, Scott Davis and Troy Drummond had two hits each for the Hornets in the opener.

In the nightcap, Matt Witte (2-3) tossed a complete game to pick up the win for UMES. The Hawks led 6-1 before DSU scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh. The Hornets had the potential tying run on second base when Cameron Cecil flied out to center to end the game.

Luis Mena had a two-run homer and James Newsome drove in two runs to lead the Hawks.

Delaware State opened the scoring when Haas doubled in Davis with one out in the bottom of the first inning.

Tony Gatto doubled in a run and Drummond had a two-run single in the sixth to cut the Hawks' lead to 6-4. The Hornets pulled to within 6-5 on a run-scoring double by Nardone in the seventh.

Matt McClain (2-4) suffered the loss despite pitching a complete game for the Hornets. McClain allowed nine hits and six runs, three earned, while striking out seven in seven innings.

The game two loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 12-15 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC. UMES is 4-22 overall and 3-2 in MEAC play.

Tigers Outhit Eagles In Doubleheader Sweep

DURHAM, N.C.  (NCCUEaglePride.com)-  North Carolina Central collected just 15 hits and scoring six runs in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Savannah State on Saturday at the Durham Athletic Park falling in game one 15-3 and game two 8-3.

SSU jumped out in front with three runs in the first and three runs in the second to grab the lead, which was highlighted by a Matthew Oglesby double that drove in three runs despite getting gunned out at third base in the second frame and a Carter Williamson throwing error led to more damage in the first. 

NCCU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Dylan Drayton hit his first career home run to right field to lead off the frame, but that's all the Eagles could muster in the first and found themselves down 6-1 after two innings.

The Diamond Eagles scratched two more runs on the board in the bottom of the third headlined by Ross Plummer's second home run of the season, putting the Eagles down 6-3 after three innings.

The Tigers answered back with two runs on the fourth and one more run in the sixth to stretch the margin to 9-3.

The final two innings saw SSU scored 3 runs to put away game one with a 15-3 win.  Savannah State hit four doubles, one triple, and a home run to pound out 18 hits in the victory.  Nine of those hits came from the top two batters in the lineup as SSU's Dexter Kelley went a perfect 6-for-6 with two doubles and a home run along with three RBIs and four runs scored.  His teammate Oglesby went 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs and three runs scored with a double and a triple.

After a scoreless first inning in game two, Savannah State used two runs in both the second and the third inning to stay on top of the Eagles 4-0.  The first two runs of the game for SSU can be credited to the winning pitcher in game one who hit the field for the final game on Saturday, Kevin Herilhy who doubled to drive in Eddie Barkley for the first run and scored from third while the Eagles had one of his fellow teammates in a run down for the final out of the frame.  The third inning saw the Tigers piece together runs on an Oglesby sacrifice fly and a Barkley single to left field putting SSU up 4-0 after three innings.

NCCU (1-25) finally got on the board in the fourth inning after a freshman Troy Marrow walk when Plummer hit a double to the gap in left center field powering Marrow around from first base give the Eagles life at 4-1, but the maroon and gray could not take advantage of the momentum leaving two more runners stranded in the frame.

NCCU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning highlighted by the second double of the afternoon from freshman Alex Moore, III.  Tyson Simpson, Jr. got it all started with a single, while Marrow drove in the game's final run with RBI No. 12 on the year putting the score at its final resting place at 8-3.

Rattlers Split A Pair With North Carolina A&T

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Florida A&M scored two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eight as they rallied to a 7-6 win over North Carolina A&T in game one and dropped a 6-2 decision to the Aggies in game two, Saturday afternoon in a MEAC doubleheader  at Moore-Kittles Field.

N.C. A&T (8-18, 2-2 MEAC) outhit FAMU (9-22, 1-4 MEAC) 11-9 in game one.

The Rattlers were paced by Cory Franklin and Adam Decker as they both finished with two hits each, while the Aggies had four players to finish with two hits apiece.

Stephen Dollar (2-0) picked up the win for the win FAMU as he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three, while Paulino Esterlin(3-2) received the loss for N.C. A&T as he gave up nine hits, six earned runs and striking out four in eight innings on the mound.

In a game two, the Rattlers and the Aggies both finished with eight hits each.

Adeyemi led the Rattlers from the plate as he finished with three hits, while both Marquis Riley and Andre McKoy finished with two hits each for the Aggies

Nick Oelker (4-2) receive the win for N.C. A&T as he went the distance, giving up eight hits, two earned runs and striking out seven in seven innings, while Jose Linton took the loss for FAMU, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out five in seven innings on the mound.
