Ryan Haas and Aaron Nardone each had three hits and three runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a 13-9 MEAC win over Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium Monday evening.
Nardone put the Hornets ahead for good with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. DSU (21-19; 9-3 MEAC) trailed 8-5 before scoring eight runs in the last four innings to notch its third straight win.
Keith Hernandez added two hits and two RBI for the Hornets, who pounded out 13 hits in the contest, including seven for extra bases.
The Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Haas doubled in Hernandez for the first run and Cameron Cecil drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
After Coppin State scored a run in the bottom of the second, DSU answered with three runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Eddie Sorondo homered to lead off the Hornet fourth, while Troy Drummond singled in a run and Hernandez had a run-scoring double in the inning.
Coppin State answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and tallied six runs in the fifth to grab an 8-5 lead. The Eagles had five hits, and also benefitted from a Delaware State error in the fifth.
The Hornets began their comeback when Haas singled in two runs in the sixth inning to cut Coppin State's lead to 8-7.
Delaware State regained the lead with four runs on just one hit in the eighth inning. The Hornets tied the game at 8-8 when Drummond, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch. There were runners at first and third with two outs when Nardone hit a shot over the fence in right field to give DSU an 11-8 lead. The homer was Nardone's third of the season.
Coppin State scored a run in the eighth, but the Hornets added two insurance runs in the ninth to close out the scoring. Hernandez tripled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to account for DSU's ninth inning runs.
Freshman Tommy Dill (5-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Hornets.
