Charlotte Walks To Mid-Week Victory Over Diamond Eagles

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -Nine walks issued by the North Carolina Central pitching staff allowed the host Forty-Niners of Charlotte just enough of an opening to make the Eagles pay in the 8-1 win on Wednesday evening at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

After a scoreless first inning, the No. 28 team in the nation Charlotte got the help they needed by freshman Jacob Russell who began the bottom of the second frame with two consecutive walks in which second baseman Corey Shaylor got the first of his extra base hits with a double down the left field line driving in the game's first two runs putting the Niners up 2-0.  A second double of the inning by right fielder Justin Wilson drove in Shaylor and gave Charlotte the 3-0 lead.

With two outs in the third inning Russell got himself into trouble by walking Cory Tilton again and Shaylor made him pay with his third home run of the season to left field vaulting Charlotte to the 5-0 lead after three innings.

The 49ers scored more runs to take a 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Russell walked the bases loaded but junior Timothy Rennard came on in-relief and forced Tony Montalbano into a double play but the first run of the inning scored.  The final run of the frame came off the bat of Justin Seager who doubled to drive in Justin Wilson.

Three Charlotte errors aided in NCCU scoring its only run of the game giving the Eagles 10 consecutive earned runs scored in the last three ballgames.

A stolen base by Shane Basen recorded the 49ers final run of the game in the home half of the sixth inning putting the contest at its final tally of 8-1.

NCCU (6-33) finished the night with seven hits scattered throughout the evening as Pegues led the way with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

#20 Miami  Uses the Long Ball to Get Past Bethune-Cookman 5-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Taking on the last of the 13-game road swing, the Wildcats headed south to take on #20 University of Miami. The Hurricanes hit a combined three home runs and used a big third inning to edge out the Wildcats, 5-3, at Alex Rodriguez Park.

The Wildcats struck first, putting a run on the board in the first, as Peter O'Brien hit one to third base to send Alejandro Sanchez home, taking the 1-0 lead in the opening frame.

The Hurricanes came back to tie, then move ahead in the second with back-to-back home runs by Harold Martinez and Brad Fieger, followed up with a UM RBI single to take a 3-1 lead before Bryan Rivera came in to close out the inning.

In the third, the Hurricanes tacked on another solo home run from Ronnie Rodriguez, but Emmanuel Castro was quick to make a response for the Wildcats, leading off the fourth by firing out a solo shot of his own.

Though B-CU held UM without a run for three, the Hurricanes were able to add another in the seventh, scoring an unearned run on a wild pitch to lead 5-2.

In the top of the eighth, facing a new pitcher for the Hurricanes, Castro got that run back on an RBI groundout to send David Lee home.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to rally in the ninth, working bases loaded with two outs, but a fly out ended the game in a 5-3 loss to the 20th ranked Hurricanes.

Despite the loss, reliever Rivera had a solid outing of 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing just a single earned run on four hits, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Sanchez hit 2-for-5 to lead the hitting for B-CU, but Castro's two RBI's held the Wildcats in keeping the score within striking distance. However, Sanchez was the only multi-hit Wildcat, and B-CU found problems with strikeouts again, tallying up 11 on the night.
