Hornets Blanked By Terps

Annapolis, Md.-Three Maryland pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout in the Terps' 8-0 win over Delaware State at Bob Smith Field this evening.

Starter Eric Potter (3-4) earned the win after scattering three singles and striking out four in five innings for the Terps. Relievers Blair Delean and Jeff Crosswhite held the Hornets without a hit over the last four innings.

Curtis Lazar knocked in two runs, while Ryan Holland and Michael Montville had two hits each to lead Maryland's eight hit attack. Holland and Montville also drove in one run each.

Ryan Haas, Aaron Nardone and Troy Drummond had the only hits for Delaware State, which stranded nine men on base.

Maryland opened the scoring when Lazar singled in a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Terps added three runs in the third to open up a 4-0 lead.

Maryland scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring.

Hornet starter Elliot Gardner (3-4) was the losing pitcher after allowing four hits and four runs (three strikeouts) in 2.1 innings.

Spartans Stay Hot, Top Virginia State 18-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Ryan Montgomery had three hits and three RBI, TiQuan Griffin hit a grand slam home run, and Ryan Davis threw seven shutout innings to help the Spartan baseball team win its second in a row and fifth in the last six games, an 18-2 victory over Virginia State on Tuesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

A day after matching the program record of 25 hits in a game, the Spartans (14-18) added 16 more against VSU (18-23). The Spartans have also scored 46 runs in their last two games, a record for any two-game stretch in the school's Division I era (since 1998). NSU also matched the school single-game record with nine stolen bases on Tuesday, four coming from senior outfielder John Lynch.

Lynch got NSU started in the second inning by singling and stealing second and third bases. Montgomery singled him home for the game's first run. Cameron Parsons added a sacrifice fly and James Taylor an RBI single in the three-run second. Lynch stole two more bases in the third and scored on a VSU error to give NSU a 4-0 lead.

After scoring thanks to another VSU miscue in the fourth, NSU put together a four-run rally in the sixth to make it 9-0. Parsons had an RBI double and Brandon Hairston a two-run single to highlight the inning.

The Spartans had most of their reserves in by the late innings, yet still put together a nine-run bottom of the eighth. Griffin, an eighth-inning defensive substitute, had the biggest hit of the frame, a grand slam homer to right field off VSU reliever Josh Cox. Parsons and Chris Joyce had run-scoring singles and Montgomery had a two-run double in the inning.

The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI triple by Darryl Stringfield and an RBI single by Maso Cotton.

That was the only damage done against the NSU pitching staff. Davis, making just the second start of the year, allowed just one hit over a season-high seven innings of work. That was a two-out single by Stringfield in the first. Six of the first seven outs Davis recorded came by strikeout. He ended with a career-best nine strikeouts and walked just one batter. His younger brother, Kyle Davis, pitched a scoreless eighth before giving way to Jason Ellington in the ninth. Despite allowing two runs, Ellington struck out the side in the ninth, giving the NSU pitchers 13 strikeouts in the game.

Montgomery ended 3-for-4 with three RBI. Parsons was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Hairston (two RBI) and Lynch (two runs scored) also went 2-for-4. Tyon Ore went 1-for-1 with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases, and Griffin had four RBI on his one swing of the bat.

Errors Costly As Florida A&M Takes Two From Diamond Eagles

DURHAM, N.C.  (NCCUEaglePride.com) -Florida A&M used just enough hitting and untimely  North Carolina Central errors to pull off the doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park.

Florida A&M's Cory Franklin hit a two-run shot to the gap in right center to take a 3-0 in the third inning.  Thanks to an RBI single in the fifth by Scott Sheplak, and a a three-run explosion in the fifth inning that included Franklin's second double FAMU led 7-1 with the lone Eagle run being driven in by Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) who singled to center field to bring in teammate Tyson Simpson, Jr.

NCCU battled back in the fifth inning as sophomore Nate Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) parked his fourth home run of the season over the short porch in right field with two runners on cutting the margin to 7-4 after five complete.

The Eagles had its chances in the following inning as seniors Edwards Pegues and Blake Murray reached base.   Following an error by the Rattler leftfielder, Derrell Parker drove in his sixth RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to left field, which was followed up by a Simpson RBI single after a FAMU wild pitch putting tow more runs on the board bringing NCCU within one run at 7-6.

That was as close as the Eagles got in the contest as Franklin came on in relief and allowed on two base runners the rest of the way to get into scoring position, and Florida A&M put one more run up in the top of the ninth thanks to a errant throw on a double play attempt as NCCU dropped game one by the final tally of 8-6.

The Eagles found themselves down 2-0 in game twon after the first inning after the NCCU defense committed its first of six errors in the Tuesday finale.

From the second through fourth inning Glen Frye allowed just two hits and struck out five batters. 

With a sacrifice fly in the third inning, the Eagles got on the board trailing 2-1, and took their first lead of the day when NCCU scored three runs on three hits that was aided by a Florida A&M error.  It all began with Pegues's second double of the season to dead center field as Etienne Farquharson drove in his fifth run of the season with a seeing-eye single to the right side to tie the game at 2.  Simpson, Jr. reach on an error by the FAMU shortstop Reginald Grant and freshman Dylan Drayton smacked a line drive up the middle scoring both Farquharson and Simpson, Jr. to give NCCU the 4-2 advantage.

Florida A&M answered back with a little aide of a two-out error that helped the Rattlers put up three runs to gain the lead back at 5-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth. 

NCCU could not muster up enough offense to make a rally stick and FAMU added two runs in the top of the seventh inning that included Franklin's second home run of the day, while also earning his second save of the day as he came on in-relief.  The Eagles did load the bases in the final frame but could not get any runs across falling 7-4 in the final game of the day.

FGCU Tops Wildcats, 5-2

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast  defeated Bethune-Cookman 5-2 in game one of the series, Tuesday at Swanson Stadium.

Both defenses played outstanding through the first four innings, as the game remained scoreless, but the Eagles broke the deadlock, putting two on the board as a result of dropped routine fly in the Wildcat outfield.

The Wildcats got their only offense rolling in the top of the seventh, as a Paul Biocic walk and Alejandro Sanchez single preceded a two-RBI Ryan Durrence double to deep center field, slimming the game to a 3-2 deficit for B-CU.

The Eagles scored in two additional consecutive innings after the fifth. FGCU put up one in the sixth, and another pair in the seventh. The Wildcats broke the scoring streak with a three-straight stop in the eighth, but the damage was done, as the Eagles wrapped the game on top 5-2.
