Spartans Sweep Doubleheader from UMES, Improve to 5-1 in MEAC PlayPRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Norfolk State pounded out 25 hits on Saturday to sweep a doubleheader from Maryland Eastern Shore at Hawks Stadium on Saturday by scores of 16-4 and 6-1.
With the wins, NSU (12-17, 5-1 MEAC) is off to its best six-game start in MEAC play since the 2006 team also started 5-1. The Hawks, meanwhile, drop to 4-27, 3-5.
The Spartans had a number of offensive standouts. James Taylor went 3-for-6 with four stolen bases, six runs scored and two RBI over the doubleheader. MEAC leading hitter John Rasberry went 4-for-5 in the two games, while Chris Joyce knocked in five runs in game one and John Lynch had three in game two.
The Spartans ended the first game due to the 10-run rule after plating five more runs in the seventh. Joyce punctuated the inning with a three-run homer, his second round-tripper of the season and second is as many games, and Montgomery added an RBI double in the frame.
Junior Ryan Shook (3-3) won for the second straight start. He struck out eight batters in his six innings of work. Shook surrendered eight hits and four runs, three earned. Jacob Foreman (1-6) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing 10 hits and 11 runs, nine earned, in three innings of work.
NSU started quickly in the nightcap, as well. Taylor led off the top of the first with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a flyout. Later in the inning, Joyce hit a two-out double and scored on a Lynch single to make it 2-0.
Lynch had another two-out RBI hit in the third, hitting a long double to left field that plated Taylor and John Rasberry. Two batters later, Chris Warren followed suit with a two-run single to score Lynch and Montgomery, making it 6-0.
Freshman right hander Justin Bhatti (1-4) tossed his first career complete game to earn his first collegiate victory. He pitched all seven innings, a career high. Bhatti scattered five hits, allowed one run, walked one and struck out four hitters.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Wildcats (17-15, 4-0 MEAC) got off to a hot start in the series with North Carolina A&T, remaining perfect in MEAC play with an 11-3 win over the Aggies in game one. Three Wildcats produced two RBI each as B-CU put up steady scoring while holding NC A&T to just four hits in the game.
Facing last season's MEAC runner-up, the first inning looked like a shootout looming, as the Wildcats scored on a Peter O'Brien single, but the Aggies answered with a home run in the bottom half to tie it at 1-1.
The Wildcats adjusted quickly in pitching and defense, holding the Aggies without a single hit for the next five innings.
B-CU used steady scoring to build up an advantage, starting with a Brashad Johnson RBI single in the second. The Wildcats tacked on three more in the fifth, on a Ryan Durrence two-RBI double to deep left center, followed up by O'Brien picking up another RBI on a groundout.
In the seventh, the Aggies made the game a little tighter, slimming B-CU's lead to only two, putting up two unearned runs.
However, the Wildcats put up five runs, set off by a David Lee sacrifice fly to left field, quickly followed by an RBI double from Nick Johnson, an RBI single for Paul Biocic, and an RBI for Alejandro Sanchez. The Aggies helped out the 'Cats as well, adding an RBI on a bases loaded walk, as the Wildcats wrapped the top of the ninth up 11-3.
Gabriel Hernandez (3-0), who pitched seven innings in the win, striking out eight with just a single walk and one earned run. Coming in to wrap up the final two innings, Jordan Dailey earned the save with three strikeouts and one walk.
Leading B-CU's hitting attack, O'Brien went 3-5 with two RBI and Durrence added 3-6 with two RBI. Also chipping in a pair of RBI were Paul Biocic (2-4, 2 runs) and Brashad Johnson (1-4). Eight Wildcats in all notched hits in the 15-hit showing.
The teams got rolling on game two, but the weather was uncooperative, as a thunderstorm quickly rolled in, dumping rain and lighting up the sky. The game had moved into the third inning, with the Aggies getting a quick jump on B-CU, scoring four in the second. When play was suspended, the Wildcats had the bases loaded and only one out on the board.
With the suspension of play, the game will resume before Sunday's scheduled final game, starting at 11:00 a.m., and resuming at the point of suspension.
