Baseball Recap: March 30

BALTIMORE -- Mike Garza had four hits and drove in six runs and Georgetown defeated Coppin State 19-7 on Wednesday at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Dan Capeless and Justin Leeson added three RBI, while Kevin Johnson and Max Friedman had two runs driven in each.

Jesse Savage had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Coppin State, while Alex Black had a pair of hits. Jim Vagnier, Derek Richards and Chris Kashangaki added RBI for the Eagles.

Georgetown (17-9) scored five runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings to coast to the victory.

The Hoyas scored five times in the first inning, but the Eagles would answer in the bottom of the third inning.

Craig Richmond singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. He scored Coppin State's first run when Savage delivered a single.

Savage moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a Kashangaki single cutting the lead to 5-2.

Georgetown extended the lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Black singled and stole second base to start the inning and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Vagnier singled to cut the lead to 7-3.

Richmond walked and Richards followed with an RBI single that scored Vagnier and trimmed the margin to 7-4.

Savage then capped the CSU scoring in the inning with a two-run double that brought Coppin State to within 7-6.

The Hoyas extended the lead to 12-6 by scoring five times in the top of the fifth inning.

Coppin State scored once in the sixth inning cutting the lead to 12-7, but Georgetown plated five runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 17-7.

UMES Hawks Fall to Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Brendan McGaheran went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven in and five others had two hits apiece as Lehigh defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 14-3, at Goodman Campus on Wednesday. Lehigh (15-8) used 16 hits and scored runs in six innings to win its six consecutive game.

UMES (3-21) had seven hits on the day and fell for the second straight time.

Tre-Von Johnson batted 2-for-4 with one walk, while Shaquille Bagwell and Bryan Chaikowsky each collected RBI.

Steven Ball (1-1) and three Lehigh relief pitchers combined to hold UMES scoreless for eight innings. Ball earned the win, going five innings, allowing just two hits and four walks. He struck out five batters.

Bernard Parker was tagged with the loss in three innings of work. Parker (0-4), making his second start of the season, gave up four hits and six earned runs while walking four with one strikeout.
