Hornets Run Past Lions In Doubleheader Sweep

Dover, Del. - Delaware State posted the biggest shutout win in the first game of a doubleheader against Lincoln (Pa.) at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Hornets defeated the Lions 28-0 in the opener, and completed the sweep with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

Delaware State's previous record margin of victory in a shutout was 27 vs. Coppin State in 2001. The Hornets also scored their most runs in a doubleheader since tallying 41 vs. Coppin State (27-0 and 14-2) that same year.

The 28 runs by the Hornets in the opener were two shy of the team record for a game. DSU scored 30 runs vs. District of Columbia (30-4) in 1985.

Ryan Haas was four-for-four with a home run and five runs batted in to lead the Hornets' 24-hit attack in game one. Haas hit a three-run homer in the first to open the scoring. He also drove in two runs in DSU's 13-run third inning, its biggest inning of the season.

Keith Hernandez was 4-for-5 with four runs batted. Hernandez hit his first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the second inning to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.

Tony Gatto and Joey Babuca also drove in four runs each for the Hornets in the opener. Gatto had a three-run double in the third, while Babuca singled in two runs in the fourth.

Elliot Gardner (1-3) allowed two hits, while striking out eight in five innings, to earn the win.

In the nightcap, Justin Allen hit a three-run blast in the second inning to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. It was hit first home run of the season. Delaware State scored two more in the third inning and three in the sixth.

Tommy Dill (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets. He allowed four hits and one run, while striking out seven, in five innings.

Bethune-Cookman Tops North Florida, 7-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After a hard-fought and scoreless first four innings, Bethune-Cookman cut loose on North Florida, Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. B-CU took advantage of an Ospreys outfield error to put multiple runs on the board and wrapped the inning with a three-run shot from Peter O'Brien, en route to a 7-0 win.

The first four innings were truly a defensive struggle, with the Wildcats only picking up three hits and no runs. Meanwhile, the Wildcat defense was holding it down, also allowing just three hits in the opening innings. Four of the game's six combined double plays came in the first four innings.

However, it was the Ospreys that broke, allowing the first run in the fifth inning as Brashad Johnson singled to left field, bringing home Emmanuel Castro. The Wildcats quickly expanded their lead, taking advantage of a dropped fly in the UNF outfield on a bases loaded situation, adding RBI for Brandon Turner and Paul Biocic. Despite a UNF pitching change, B-CU dealt the most damaging blow in the inning, as Peter O'Brien cleared the bases on a three-run homer to left field, making the toll six runs in the inning.

The Wildcats added another in the sixth, with B. Johnson earning another RBI, bringing Turner home on a single to the middle infield.

While B-CU's offense lit up the scoreboard in mid-game, the defense stood strong, allowing just two more hits in the game and holding on for the shutout.

Montana Durapau (1-2) played a tough game for B-CU, notching the start and the win, while pitching six innings with five strikeouts and giving up just three hits and three walks. Entering in relief, Jordan Dailey picked up his third save in preserving the shutout, pitching three innings with two hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Offensively, Peter O'Brien hit 2-4 with three RBI, including the home run that changed the landscape of the game, while Brashad Johnson got the Wildcats going, hitting 2-4 with two RBI.
