Hens Storm Back To Defeat Hornets
Delaware scored nine runs in the eighth inning en route to a come-from-behind 12-9 victory over Delaware State at Soldier Field. The Hornets led 9-3 before the Blue Hen rally.
Steve Ulaky was 4-for-5 with three home runs and seven runs batted in to lead Delaware's 10-hit attack. Ulaky's three-run homer off Delaware State reliever Jordan Elliot snapped a 9-9 tie with two out in the top of the eighth inning. It was his second homer of the inning, and third of the game. The senior first baseman hit a two-run shot earlier in the eighth to cut Delaware State's lead to 9-5. His first homer of the game, a two-run blast, gave the Hens a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
Delaware State's Ryan Haas led off the fourth inning with a homer to cut UD's lead to 3-1. The Hornets pulled to within 3-2 when Tony Gatto led off the fifth with a double and later scored when Troy Drummond reached base on a Delaware error.
The Hornets scored five runs in the sixth to take the lead. Gatto doubled in Cameron Cecil with the tying run and freshman D.J. Miller followed with a three-run homer to give DSU a 6-3 lead. It was the first career home run for the former A.I. DuPont High School (Del.) star.
Scott Davis knocked in Delaware State's fifth run of the inning on a bunt single to give the Hornets a 7-3 lead.
DSU stretched its lead to 9-3 when Gatto doubled in Justin Allen and Cecil with one out in the seventh. Gatto was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the contest.
Cecil, Davis and Keith Hernandez had two hits each for the Hornets, who pounded out 14 hits in the contest.
Delaware reliever Eric Young was credited with the win. Jose Portela was tagged with the loss for the Hornets.
The Hens have won the last five games between the state's only Division I baseball programs to open up a 36-7 lead in the series.
B-CU Falls to #28 Stetson on 9th Inning Comeback
Facing #28 Stetson, the Wildcats got off to an effective start offensively and played from ahead for most of the game. The Hatters, a tough offensive team themselves broke down the lead as the innings passed, making a final, successful run at it in the bottom of the ninth inning, overcoming the Wildcats for the 7-6 win.
Offensively, the Wildcats got moving right away, with a Peter O'Brien RBI single to center field in the first inning.
Stetson, however, didn't stay quiet for long, putting up a run of their own to tie it in the bottom half.
In the top of the second, the Wildcats were able to create some separation, as Matt Wright got it started with a sacrifice bunt, followed up on the next batter, as Alejandro Sanchez hit a two-RBI single straight down the left field line, giving the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
Again, the Hatters stayed with B-CU, making up the difference in the bottom of the third, knotting it up at 4-all.
The Wildcat offense continued to chip in runs, scoring in the fourth and sixth, while the B-CU defense stood strong, holding Stetson to just two hits in the next three innings, and a single run in the seventh, to maintain a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
In the final frame, B-CU closer Joey Munoz (1-2) put away two batters, but the Hatters' Nick Rickles came up with a triple to the shallow corner of right field, scoring a run to tie it at 6-6. A high-hopping hit to shortstop for the next batter gave just enough time to make the base and push the final run across the plate, putting Stetson on top 7-6.
The majority of Stetson's offense came from second baseman Robert Crews, who tallied five of SU's nine hits on 5-5 hitting with 3 RBI.
B-CU was led by Brashad Johnson, hitting 3-4 with an RBI, while two more RBI came from Matt Wright and Alejandro Sanchez, hitting 2-3 and 2-4 respectively.
