DSU Hornets Use Long Ball to Defeat Hartford Hawks

Scott Davis and Ryan Haas hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning to lift Delaware State to a 3-2 victory over Hartford at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Hornets won for the second time in three games to improve to 5-12 on the season. Hartford fell to 0-10-1.

Delaware State trailed 2-1 when Davis led off the sixth with a homer to left field to tie the game. Haas followed with a solo shot over the center field fence to put the Hornets ahead.

Starter Jordan Elliott (2-3) allowed six hits and two unearned runs in seven innings to earn the win. Elliott struck out four and walked one. Josh Patman tossed two shutout innings to record his first career save.


Hartford opened the scoring with two unearned runs in the second inning. The Hornets pulled to within 2-1 when Keith Hernandez drove in a run on a bases loaded single with none out in the third. Hartford starter Mike Thatcher got Davis pop out and Haas to hit into a double play to avoid further damage in the inning.

Rattlers Split With Jackson State

 

Florida A&M split a double-header with Southwestern Athletic Conference member Jackson State, as the Tigers handed the Rattlers a 7-3 loss in game one.  But FAMU would rebound in game two as they pulled out a 6-1 win, Friday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.

In game one, FAMU tallied 11 hits, while Jackson State punched out seven.

The Rattlers were paced by Adam Decker as he went three-for-four from the plate and scored one run.

Kendall Logan led the Tigers from the plate as he went two-for-four from the plate, scoring two runs, while driving in three. 

Quintavious Drains (2-1)  picked up the win for JSU, as he gave up 10 hits, three earned runs and striking out 12 in seven innings on the mound.  Heath Blackburn (1-5) received the loss for the Rattlers as he toed the mound, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and striking out six in six and two-third innings of work. 

JSU took a 2-0 lead after five and one-half innings of play as Logan scored on a Jose Cruz ground out to shortstop in the top of the second inning.  Then Logan would single up the middle scoring Charles Epperson in the top of the six

The Tigers would score five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead as Stephen Curtis scored on Frank Solis' single, followed by a Gabriel Babineaux single up the middle  scoring both Epperson and Solis.   Babineaux would score on a Logan two-run homer to left field.

FAMU would plate three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Antonio Kilpatrick singled up the middle, scoring Oscar Santalo.  Cory Franklin hit into a fielder's choice scoring Adam Decker, followed by a Jimmy Terrell double scoring Tobi Adeyemi for the 7-3 final.

In game two, FAMU would punch out nine hits, while JSU finished with four.

Cory Franklin had the hot bat for the Rattlers as he went two-for-four from the plate, scoring a pair of runs, while driving in a pair, while the Tigers had four players to finish with one hit each.

Tim Jones (1-3) picked up his first win of the season as he toed the mound for the Rattlers, allowing two hits and striking out six in five and two-thirds innings of scoreless work.  Desmond Russell (0-1) recorded the loss for the Tigers, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and striking out four in five innings of work.

Rattlers took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as they scored three runs on four hits as Adeyemi scored on Dylan West sacrifice fly to right field.  Then Franklin would score on a Darius Washington single to left field, followed by a Santalo single scoring Justin Abney.

FAMU picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Franklin homer to left field, giving the Rattlers a 5-0 lead. 

The Rattlers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Kilpatrick singled to left center scoring Santalo, giving FAMU a 6-0 score.

JSU scored their only run of the game in the top of the seventh as Angel Brito scored on a FAMU infielder's error.
