Aggies Shutout NJIT Twice
GREENSBORO - North Carolina A&T got career performances from pitchers Esterlin Paulino and Nick Oelker to earn shutout wins over New Jersey Institute of Technology in doubleheader action from War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Paulino struck out nine over nine innings, and he surrendered just three hits in a 4-0 Aggies win in the first game. In the second contest, Oelker pitched a complete-game two-hitter while striking out nine to lead N.C. A&T to a 12-0 win.
Marquis Riley went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Aggies offensively in Game 1. An error in left field led to the Aggies first run. After Luke Tendler singled, Xavier Macklin reached on the two-base error. Riley's groundout gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Riley's second RBI of the day came on an 0-2 pitch that he drove into center field for a base hit. The hit scored Macklin who walked and stole a base.
Riley's run-producing hits were more than enough for Paulino. He only allowed one runner to reach second throughout the game, and he set NJIT batters down in order five times. Paulino improved to 2-0 on the season.
Oelker was just as dominant in Game 2. At one point during the game, Oelker retired 13 straight batters. It wasn't until the seventh inning of the seven-inning game that Oelker's streak was broken.
Tendler and Mark Nales had three hits apiece with Nales adding four RBIs. Riley, Carvell Copeland and Dario Little had two hits apiece. Copeland opened the Aggies first with a single to left field. Tendler followed by tripling to right center field for a 1-0 Aggies lead. Macklin didn't make life any easier for NJIT pitching as he clobbered his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall for a 3-0 N.C.A&T advantage. The five-run rally ended on a Nales double that scored Little.

UC-Irvine Uses Big First Inning to Defeat Wildcats 9-3 at Urban Classic
COMPTON, Calif. - The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats played well on defense throughout the game, but had a lapse in the opening inning, as UC-Irvine put seven runs on the board to open up, leading to a 9-3 victory for the Anteaters.
UC-Irvine scored the first seven runs of the game straight away, as Ali Simpson uncharacteristically walked the first batter, with the two more subsequently hit by pitches, and the fourth walked on this gusty and cold California afternoon.
The first pitch swung on in the game for UC- Irvine 's Drew Hillman was belted for a grand slam. Still in the first frame, a triple tacked two more on the board to conclude the Anteaters' scoring for the inning at 7-0.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth inning, with Cesar Rivera running out a double. Two batters later, he came across the plate with the assistance of a long single to left center by Emmanuel Castro.
In the third inning UC- Irvine loaded up their counts and again loaded the bases before a double brought two more runs in. Jordan Dailey took over and held UC- Irvine to no runs and just 3 hits in the final 5.1 innings.
With defense holding UC- Irvine at bay, the Wildcats had a shot to turn the game around late. Leading off the sixth, Brandon Tucker shot a solo home run over the right field wall. B-CU loaded up the bases as they hit the meat of the lineup, but B-CU couldn't capitalize, wrapping the inning with a popup and a ground-out.
DJ Leonard added another with a home run in the top of the ninth, concluding the Wildcats' scoring as the game closed in a 9-3 loss.
Dailey's introduction onto the mound proved key in giving B-CU opportunities to climb back in despite the early setback. Dailey finished with 3 strikeouts, allowing no runs, walking none, and giving up just three hits.
Turner and Leonard's home runs led the Wildcats, while they joined Castro in collecting RBI on the game.

Rasberry Homers Twice as Spartans Split with Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior outfielder John Rasberry hit a pair of two-run homers to help the Norfolk State baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Tigers won the opener 8-5, but NSU bounced back to win the nightcap, 11-6.
Game 1 started off as a duel between the team's top starters as both NSU's Ryan Shook (0-2) and SSU's Michael Allegretti (2-0) cruised through the first four innings. NSU scored first on an RBI single by Chris Joyce in the top of the fourth, but the Tigers got to Shook in the bottom of the sixth. SSU took advantage of two Spartan errors and got a key two-out, two-run double by Julius Green to key a four-run sixth innings.
Rasberry got the Spartans back within 4-3 on a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, but SSU extended its lead to 8-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh and three more in the eighth.
NSU made it interesting in the ninth, loading the bases without a hit or an out. But the Spartans were limited to two runs in the inning, on a bases-loaded walk to Brandon Hairston and a sacrifice fly by Blaze Zeilman that made it 8-5. Courtrevez McTier retired Sammy Serafine on a flyout with two runners on base to end it.
Green went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI in the opener for the Tigers.
Shook was the hard-luck loser despite matching his career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings. He gave up nine hits and five runs, two of them earned. Allegretti (2-0) pitched six innings, giving up six hits and three runs, two earned.
The nightcap, however, was all NSU. SSU took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Green led off with a single and later scored on an NSU error. But the Spartans would score the next 11 runs to break it open.
NSU scored five runs in the top of the second, highlighted by another Rasberry two-run homer, to take a 5-1 lead. Rasberry added a sacrifice fly and Serafine an RBI single in NSU's three-run fourth. John Lynch put an exclamation point on the win with a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Tigers scored five runs, all unearned, thanks in part to a trio of NSU errors in the bottom of the seventh.
NSU sophomore right hander Jordan Egan struck out a career-high eight batters in earning his first win of the year. Egan (1-0) allowed five hits and one run in five innings. Kevin Herlihy took the loss for the Tigers after yielding eight hits and eight runs, four earned, in 3.2 innings.
Spartan pitchers struck out 11 SSU batters in both games.
Rasberry drove in five runs on the day, while Lynch knocked in four runs and scored six - three in each game. Joyce and Serafine had three hits apiece on the afternoon.
