North Carolina A&T freshman Kelvin Freeman was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team.
Freeman, a 6-foot-4 native of Wilmington, N.C., led the Aggies in hitting during his rookie campaign by batting .379. He also drove in 44 runs and hit six home runs. In May, Freeman was also named MEAC Rookie of the Year.
Freeman put together a late surge to claim his honors. On March 10, he was hitting .282 with no home runs and six RBIs. Exactly two months later, Freeman was hitting .413 with six home runs and 36 RBIs.
Before starting his leg kick and swing, Freeman made a timing adjustment that allowed him to shorten his stance so he could gather himself. The tweak resulted in a red-hot bat for Freeman. From April 18-May 14, Freeman put together a 13-game hitting streak. Within that hitting streak, he had one of the best games in the nation during the 2010 season. On May 8 against Coppin State, he went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and a two-run homer that helped him record nine RBIs. Only three other players in the country have recorded more RBIs in a game in 2010.
Freeman also had an outstanding MEAC Tournament. He was named to the all-tournament team after a five-game stretch in which he recorded five hits, five runs scored and five RBIs
Freeman's hot streak helped the Aggies finish 16-4 over their last 20 regular-season games. Freeman also helped led the Aggies finish 31-26 overall and 15-3 in the MEAC as the program broke the school record for conference wins and completed its first 30-win season in school history. The Aggies also finished second in the Black College Baseball rankings, and they advanced to the MEAC Championship series.
