Jacksonville Edges Rattlers 11-8
Florida A&M committed six errors, allowed six unearned runs and Jacksonville University scored on four sacrifice flies as the Dolphins edge the Rattlers 11-8, Wednesday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
FAMU (10-28-1) recorded a game high 13 hits, while JU (21-19) finished with 10.
Darryl Evans led the Rattlers as he went three-for-five from the plate scoring three runs with two RBIs.
Dan Gulbransen led the charge for the Dolphins as he tallied four hits in five at-bats scoring two runs with two RBIs.
In five innings of work, Chris Kilpatrick (2-0) picked the win for JU allowing eight hits for earned runs and striking out three.
Kelvin Hale (0-2) received the loss for FAMU as he gave up six hits, five earned runs and striking out two in four innings.
The Dolphins grabbed the lead in the top of the first as Jonathan Murphy scored on an Alex Martinez sacrifice fly to center field. Then Glen Johnson would cross the plate for JU on a FAMU infielder's error, followed a Chris Connelly sacrifice fly to right field scoring Gulbransen, giving the JU a 3-0 advantage.
FAMU would answer back in the bottom of the first as Evans scored on a JU infielder's error, cutting JU's lead to 3-1.
Daniel Lee added another run for the Rattlers in the bottom of the second inning as he singled to right field scoring Jimmie Terrell, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Dolphins.
JU scored three more runs in their top half of the third inning as Adam Walker scored on a Jimmy Howick sacrifice fly to center field followed by an Alex Swenson double to center field scoring Connelly. Swenson would then score on a DerekAbis single to centerfield increasing the Dolphins' lead to 6-2.
Scott Sheplak cut into JU's lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third inning as he doubled to left center field scoring Jared Jeffries.
The Dolphins score two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as Gulbransen solo homered to right field and Martinez scoring on Rattler error, giving JU a 8-3 lead.
A two-run homer by Evans cut JU's lead to 8-5 in to the bottom of the fourth inning.
Both Johnson and Abis made the score 10-5 to increase the Dolphins' lead in the top of the fifth inning as Johnson scored on Gulbransen single and Abis scoring on another Rattle error.
FAMU picked up a pair of runs in the bottom the seventh inning on a Derrick Shaw two-run homer scoring Jeffries, cutting the JU lead to 10-7.
Connelly made the score 11-7 as he scored on an Abis sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the eighth inning.
The Rattlers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Evans scored on a John Scott single back to the mound for the 11-8 final.
FAMU will close out the 2010 baseball in a three-game series Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series against Norfolk State with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8 and a single game on Sunday, May 9 at 1 p.m. start both days.
Hornets Come Up Short To Midshipmen
Navy scored the go-ahead runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball in the sixth inning en route to a 4-3 win over Delaware State in college baseball at Soldier Field today.
The Hornets dropped their seventh straight game to fall to 12-29 on the season. The Midshipmen have won two in a row to improve to 29-21.
The score was 2-2 when two Delaware State errors put Navy runners on second and third with one out in the sixth. The Midshipmen went ahead 3-2 on a wild pitch, and opened up a 4-2 lead when the second run of the inning crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Delaware State opened the scoring when Scott Davis led off the first inning with a triple, and was driven in on a groundout by Keith Hernandez.
Navy tied the game at 1-1 when a run scored on a double play in the top of the fourth. The Hornets regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jose Portela was hit by a pitch with one out, and later scored on a one-out single by Warren Stimpson.
The Midshipmen tied the game at 2-2- on a run-scoring double by Kendall Bolt in the top of the fifth.
The Hornets pulled to within 4-3 in the sixth when Portela's sacrifice fly scored Tony Gatto, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Delaware State had the potential game-tying run cut down at the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning. Portela doubled with two out, but was thrown at the plate by Navy left fielder Andrew Hahn when he tried to score on a single by Brandon Crist.
Navy starter Tyler Mapes (3-2) went six innings to earn the win, while Joel Rinehart threw three scoreless innings to collect his third save.
Shane Foreman suffered the loss for DSU.
Crist was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Hornets.
Richards' Clutch Triple Downs UMES, 4-3 At Coppin State
Derek Richards tripled down the right-field line with two outs in the eighth inning, scoring Dan Gleiberman from second for the winning run as Coppin State nipped Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 4-3, at Joe Cannon Stadium Wednesday.
The Hawks had tied the game in the seventh on a Phil Vaughn double, plating pinch runner Elliott Arrington from second.
UMES threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting Vaughn to third with two away, on his 24th steal of the season and a throwing error, before Tre-von Johnson struck out swinging to end the game.
The loss for UMES (5-39, 3-15 MEAC) closes its conference slate, meaning the Hawks must await the outcome of the Florida A&M-Norfolk State three-game set in Norfolk, Va., Saturday and Sunday to learn if they qualify for the MEAC Tournament May 20-23. With the win, CSU improved to 13-28 (7-8 MEAC) and closes its league schedule hosting North Carolina A&T this weekend.
Gleiberman paced the Eagles' offense with a 2-for-3 effort with a first-inning home run, two runs scored and two driven in.
Vaughn was 1-for-3 with the double, steal and a walk.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Coppin State took the lead thanks to a throwing error by second baseman Shaquille Bagwell with two outs. Chris Kashangaki singled to shortstop with one gone and stole second after a strikeout. Bagwell overthrew the ball to first, allowing Kashangaki to tally the go-ahead run.

UMES tied the game in the top of the third. Nick Wiggins singled to the hole at short to start things off and J.J. Corriveau followed with a walk before Vaughn sacrificed the runners up a base. Johnson then lifted a fly to center to score Wiggins from third.
The Hawks pulled even with the help of two wild pitches from CSU's Jim Vagnier to score Corriveau.
Vagnier (3-7) earned the win with 7.1 innings of five-hit baseball. He struck out eight and walked five, surrendering all three runs. Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) took the loss in relief, falling to 1-9. He pitched the seventh and eighth, giving up one run and fanning two. Mark Reynoso pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
Tony Gonzales started for UMES and got a no decision in six innings. He gave up seven hits, two earned runs and walked four while striking out two
UMES returns home to face North Carolina Central in two doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. First pitch both days is 12 p.m.
