Eagles Remain Alive With Win Over Maryland Eastern Shore

Dwight Robinson homered twice and Mark Reynoso had three hits and two runs batted in leading Coppin State to a 12-8 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in an elimination game on Friday at the MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Eagles remained alive in the double elimination tournament with the victory and will face Delaware State at 6 p.m. tonight, while Maryland Eastern Shore saw its season come to an end.

Robinson hit his first two homers of the season and drove in three runs, while Reynoso was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Coppin State (14-32) posted its first victory in the MEAC Tournament since beating North Carolina A&T 5-4 in 2006.

The Eagles pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five UMES errors to record the victory.

Coppin State broke a 3-3 tie by scoring six times in the top of the five inning to take control of the game and then held off a late Hawk rally.

Craig Richmond had a one-out single to get things started in the decisive inning and advanced to third when Dan Gleiberman reached on an error and Harry Williams was hit by a ptich to load the bases.

Derek Richards then reached on error, which allowed all three runners to score and gave the Eagles a 6-3 lead.

Robinson singled to score Richards and then moved to third on two more Maryland Eastern Shore errors. He came in to score when Reynoso singled to left giving the Eagles an 8-3 lead.

Chris Kashangaki capped the six-run inning for the Eagles with a base hit that plated Reynoso and increased the CSU lead to 9-3.

The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Eagles scored two more times in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-4 lead.

Robinson hit his second homer of the game in the top of the eighth inning to up the lead to 12-4 and then the Hawks began their comeback.

Shaquille Bagwell hit a one-out single and moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lucas Koenig plated Bagwell with an RBI groundout that cut the lead to 12-5.

Luis Mena singled and Nick Wiggins followed with a walk, which placed runners on first and second with two outs. Phil Vaughn scored Mena with a single to center and the Hawks drew to within 12-7 when Tre-von Johnson also singled to score Wiggins.

Bagwell singled to start the UMES ninth inning and Lorenzo Christy reached on a Coppin State fielding error.

Koenig, who had three hits and two runs batted in, trimmed the lead to 12-8 with an RBI single.

Reynoso then came in to relieve Scott Donnelly and induced a pop up and a double play grounder to end the game.

Jim Vagnier picked up the victory for the Eagles, while Tony Gonzales absorbed the loss for the Hawks.

The baseball action continues at 2 p.m. with North Carolina A&T taking on Norfolk State. Coppin State/Delaware State will follow at 6 p.m. A complete bracket is available on www.MEACsports.com

The championship finale is set for Sunday, May 23 at 2 p.m. and will air on ESPNU in a tape-delayed format on May 24 at 5 p.m.  The broadcast will be the MEAC's first televised baseball championship.  

Admission for the 2010 MEAC Baseball Championship is $4 for children (13 and under), students and seniors and $8 for adults.  Discounted ticket packages are available for all three days at a cost of $12 for children, students and seniors and $20 for adults.  Tickets can be purchased at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, 105 E.
