Baseball Recap: May 7-9

Norfolk State Sweeps Rattlers, 11-7, 12-0

Florida A&M dropped a pair of decisions to Norfolk State in a doubleheader 11-7 and 12-0, Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

In game one, NSU (17-23-1, 8-9 MEAC) belted a game high 14 hits, while FAMU (10-29-1, 3-13 MEAC) finished with 11.

TiQuan Griffin led the charge for NSU as he went a perfect three-for-three from the plate scoring two runs with two RBIs.

FAMU was paced by Derrick Shaw as he went three-for-five form the plate scoring two runs.

Jason Bakers (4-5) picked up the win for the Spartans allowing six hits, six earned runs and striking out three in six innings, while Heath Blackburn (2-7) received the loss for the Rattlers, giving up 12 hits and five earned runs in six innings on the mound.

In game two, NSU tallied 13 hits, while FAMU only managed one.

Chris Warren led the Spartans from the plate as he was a perfect three-for-three scoring two runs with two RBIs.

Washington belted out the Rattlers only hit.

Chase Davenport (4-3) held the Rattlers scoreless as he gave up one hits  and striking out three in five innings, while Shaw (1-2)  received the loss for the Rattlers allowing 10 hits, six earned runs and striking out three in three and one-third innings.

Hornets Outmuscled By Wildcats 

Bethune-Cookman clinched the MEAC baseball regular season title with a 19-13 win over Delaware State in the first game of a doubleheader at wind swept Soldier Field today. The Wildcats completed the sweep with a 25-9 win in the nightcap.

BCU improved to 17-0 in the MEAC. Delaware State is now 12-29 overall and 8-9 in conference play.

The Wildcats combined for 40 hits and 10 home runs in the doubleheader.

In the opener, Bethune-Cookman scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second to build an 8-0 lead. Peter O'Brien was 2-for-5 with a homer and five RBI to lead the Wildcats' 17-hit attack. BCU had three home runs in the contest.

Scott Davis was 4-for-5, while Warren Stimpson had three hits for Delaware State in game one.  Keith Hernandez led the Hornets with three RBI in the opener.

In the nightcap, BCU opened the scoring with seven runs in the second inning and never looked back. The Wildcats had 23 hits in the contest, including seven homers. Ryan Durrence was 2-for-6 with two homers and six RBI for the Cats. DJ Leonard had a homer and four RBI for Bethune-Cookman.

Mike Rizzuto was the hitting star for Delaware State in game two, connecting for two home runs and four runs batted in.

Aggies Sweep Coppin State, 14-10, 23-2

Freshman Kelvin Freeman went 4-for-5 with nine RBIs in a 23-2 win over Coppin State in doubleheader baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies won the first game 14-10.

Freeman's day included a grand slam and a two-run home run. Senior George Hines contributed with two hits, three runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore Xavier Macklin added a three-run homer for the Aggies who improved to 24-23 overall and 14-3 in the MEAC. The Aggies have now won a school-record 14 conference games. They have also won those 14 games by an average of 10 runs.

Freeman added an RBI in the first game to end the day with 10. Nick Rogers, Alex Grubb, Marquis Riley and Macklin all homered in the first game for A&T. Rogers and Grubb had two RBIs apiece.

The Aggies trailed 3-2 in Game 1 before a three-run fourth fueled by an RBI single from Freeman gave them the lead. The Aggies increased their lead in the fifth. Dario Little led off the inning with a walk, which led to a two-run homer by Rogers. Macklin followed with another homer, marking the third time this season Rogers and Macklin have hit back-to-back home runs. Macklin's homer gave the Aggies an 8-3 lead.

Consecutive doubles by Reynoso and Black in the Eagles half of the fifth moved them to within two at 8-6. But the Aggies kept the pressure on. They scored three runs on two Coppin State wild pitches and a balk in the sixth.

An Eagles' error allowed another Aggies run in the seventh, and when Hines singled up the middle to score Mark Nales the Aggies held a comfortable 13-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Esterlin Paulino (7-2) earned the win in Game 1. Rogers improved to 9-3 on the season by striking out four. The two teams play again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Norfolk State Blanks Rattlers, 10-0

Norfolk State completed their three-game sweep of the Florida A&M as they defeated the Rattlers 10-0, here Sunday afternoon at the Mary L. Miller Field. 

NSU's (19-23, 9-9 MEAC) pitching staff held FAMU (10-31-1, 3-15 MEAC) to three hits, while the Spartans finished with a game high 14.

Ryan Shook (3-2) picked up the win for the Spartans as he pitched three scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Eric Cotton (0-5) received the loss for the Rattlers as he gave up three hits, two earned runs and struck out one in one and one-third innings.

Sammy Serafine led NSU as he went three-for-four from the plate scoring two runs with one RBI.

FAMU had three players to garner one hit each.

Hawks Roll To Doubleheader Sweep Of NCCU, 12-2, 19-15

Junior Bryan Chaikowsky went 6-for-9 with seven runs driven in to help Maryland Eastern Shore to a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central, 12-2 and 19-15, at Hawks Stadium Saturday.

Chaikowsky had a double and three-run home run with five RBIs in the opener and followed that up with another double, a triple and two RBI in the wild nightcap - a game that featured a combined 30 hits and 19 errors.

With the wins, UMES improved to 7-39 on the season while NCCU fell to 2-43. Sophomore left-handed pitcher John DesChamps threw seven strong innings in Game 1 for the win. DesChamps (2-8) scattered five hits, allowing one earned run and one walk while striking out six. Junior righty Matt Witte went four, surrendering 14 runs on 10 hits to move to 3-6 on the year.

B-CU Rallies Past Hornets For Series Sweep

Bethune-Cookman scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 13-9 win over Delaware State in MEAC baseball at Soldier Field.

The Wildcats, who clinched the MEAC regular season title on Saturday, completed the conference schedule with an 18-0 record (32-19 overall). Delaware State is 8-10 in the MEAC and 12-30 overall.

Delaware State broke an 8-8 tie on a two-out single by Scott Davis in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bethune-Cookman tied the game at nine on a single by Emmanuel Castro in the top of the ninth inning. The Wildcats pulled ahead 10-9 when Matt Wright followed with a run-scoring in the inning.  BCU padded its lead when the next batter, Alejando Sanchez, followed with a three-run homer.

The Hornets trailed 6-1 before scoring seven runs in the third inning to take the lead. Mike Rizzuto doubled in the first two runs of the inning. Also in the inning, Matt Aleman had a run-scoring single and Abe Eubank was credited with a RBI on a bases loaded walk. Brandon Crist capped off the inning with a three-run homer to give DSU an 8-6 lead.

Bethune-Cookman evened the game at 8-8 on a two-run single by Jeremy Davis in the fourth inning.

Eubank hit his team leading 11th home run of the season to cut Bethune-Cookman's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

Seven Delaware State players had at least two hits. Jose Portela had three hits, while Davis, Eubank, Rizzuto, Crist, Aleman and Keith Hernandez tallied two each for the Hornets.

Oelker Continues To Pitch Well, Aggies Sweeps Coppin State

Sophomore Nick Oelker put together another solid start to lead the Aggies to a 7-4 win over Coppin State Sunday night at Joe Cannon Stadium. Oelker (3-5), who normally starts the Aggies midweek games, picked up the win by giving up just one earned run over eight innings. He also struck out five and walked just one Eagle.

Freshman Kelvin Freeman, coming off of a nine RBI performance, continued his hitting ways on Sunday. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 performance. He also scored a run and had three RBIs. Senior James Howard was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Freeman's two-run RBI in the third gave the Aggies a 4-1 lead. Two innings later, the Aggies looked headed toward another blowout in conference play. The Aggies opened the fifth with back-to-back singles from Dario Little and Marquis Riley. Xavier Macklin loaded the bases with a walk.

Freshman Alex Grubb hit into a double play, but Little still scored to give the Aggies a four-run lead. Riley advanced to third on the double play and later scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 advantage.

The Eagles finally got to Oelker in the seventh inning. Chris Kashangaki's single up the middle scored Mark Reynoso who reached on an error. Kashangaki later scored on an error, and Cipriano Garza would move the Eagles to within two on a Craig Richmond sacrifice fly.

Macklin killed the Eagles momentum with his 12th home run of the season in the eighth inning. Coppin State did put the tying run on the plate in the ninth inning. But Richmond hit into a force play to help the Aggies improve to 25-23 overall and 15-3 in the MEAC. The 15 conference wins is a school record. Garrett Braun picked up his third save of the season.

UMES Splits Doubleheader With NCCU On Senior Day

Maryland Eastern Shore split a doubleheader on Senior Day at Hawks Stadium, winning 10-5 before falling 8-5, Sunday.

UMES (8-40) used a six-run eighth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit in the opener but could not complete a late-inning rally in the nightcap.

Playing his final game in Princess Anne, Phil Vaughn,one of five senior honored prior to first pitch, finished the day 5-for-9 with two doubles, two steals and three runs scored. He was 3-for-5 with a double, run and an RBI in the victory.

NCCU relief pitcher Jeremy Tillet (0-1) allowed four straight Hawks to reach base in the decisive eighth inning of Game 1 to tie the game, 5-5. Nick Wiggins started things off with a single and pinch runner Elliott Arrington moved to second when Tillet bobbled a ground ball in front of the mound hit by Lorenzo Christy. Vaughn and Tre-Von Johnson then each beat out but singles on consecutive at-bats for the first run of the inning.

With Jeff Citero on the mound and runners on second and third, Bryan Chaikowsky plated the go-ahead tally with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Hawks then made it a two-run game with a perfectly executed double steal of home and second by Vaughn and Johnson, respectively, followed by a one-out two-run double by Shaquille Bagwell that brought Elliott Alston and Johnson in.

Luis Mena added an RBI single to center to make for the final margin.
