Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader At Coppin State, Win 8-3, 5-0 Over Eagles

Bethune-Cookman (25-16, 11-0 MEAC) pitcher Ali Simpson, the winner in game one and reliever Jordan Dailey held CSU to eight hits in the opener. Simpson (5-1) pitched six innings allowing three runs and Daily pitched a scoreless final three innings for the save, his first in 2010.

In the opener, consecutive hits by Justin Hoyte, Matt Wright (RBI), DJ Leonard, and Ryan Durrence (2 RBI double) gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead in the first inning.  B-CU batted around in the inning and Hoyte's second hit of the inning, a bases loaded double, knocked in three more runs for the early 7-0 advantage.

Hoyte was 3-4 in the opener and Peter O'Brien was 3-5 to pace the 14-hit attack.

Game two saw the Wildcats go up 1-0 in the top of the first on a Peter O'Brien sac fly RBI.  Emmanuel Castro had a sac fly RBI in the fourth inning and a double steal by Jeremy Davis and DJ Leonard scored to make the lead 3-0 in the fourth.

Great defensive throws by Matt Wright and Ryan Durrence preserved the B-CU shutout in the third inning with Durrence's throw to the plate and tag by O'Brien nailed speedy Lonnie Richmond trying to score from first on a double in the right field corner. Wright's relay to Durrence then Ryan's bullet to home completed the stellar play.

Brandon Turner tripled and scored on a Hoyte single to make the score 4-0 in the 7th and Bethune-Cookman added one more run in the inning to make the final count 5-0. Jeremy Davis was 2-3 and the Wildcats were limited to six hits in the second contest.

Hornets Split Twin-Bill With Norfolk State

Dover, Del. (Apr. 24, 2010) --- Mike Rizzuto and Abe Eubank drove in two runs each to lead Delaware State to an 8-7 win over Norfolk State in the first game of a MEAC baseball doubleheader at Soldier Field today.

Norfolk State scored four runs in their last at-bat to take the nightcap, 9-6.

In the opener, Delaware State trailed 4-3 before scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. DSU's Jose Portela hit a solo homer with one out to tie the game at 4-4.  The Hornets took the lead, 7-4, when a Norfolk State throwing error allowed three runs to cross the plate. Delaware State also scored its fifth run of the inning on a Norfolk State miscue.

Portela recorded the last four outs in relief for DSU to earn his third save of the season. Delaware State starting pitcher Elliot Gardner (4-2) allowed eight hits and four runs in six innings to pick up the win.

In the nightcap, Norfolk State trailed 6-3 after seven innings. The Spartans scored two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to earn the win.

The score was 3-3 when the Hornets scored three runs in the fifth. Eubank singled in the go-ahead run, and DSU pulled ahead when two runs scored on a Norfolk State error.

The Spartans pulled ahead 7-6 on a single by Ryan Wiggins with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Norfolk State tacked on insurance runs on a bases loaded walk to Chris Joyce and a sacrifice fly by John Lynch in the inning.

Offensive Outburst Leads Aggies To Sweep Of Savannah State

Sophomore Marquis Ruffin had a combined eight RBIs to lead North Carolina A&T to a doubleheader sweep of Savannah State 18-3 and 16-8 in baseball action at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Senior Nick Rogers was perfect at the plate. He went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the first game. He then went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in Game 2.

 George Hines also had a run afternoon at the plate. He hit two home runs in the first game and followed up with a homer in the second contest. Freshman Kelvin Freeman had four RBIs and a home run in Game 2.

A&T had an eight-run third to break open the first game, but the Aggies had to rally to win the following game. As the Aggies pitcher, Rogers gave up seven runs and eight hits over the first three innings as the Aggies found themselves in a 7-2 hole.

It wouldn't take the Aggies long to recoup. A walk to Hines and a single by Dario Little set up Rogers' double down the left line to put the Aggies down 7-3. Sophomore Xavier Macklin followed with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Little.

Riley's RBI single made it 7-5 before Freeman delivered the biggest blow with a three-run blast to left for an 8-7 lead. The Aggies went on to score at least one run in each of the remaining three innings to blow the game open.

Sophomore Esterlin Paulino (5-2) pitched a complete-game five hitter and struck out eight in the process. Rogers (7-3) was the Game 2 winner. He went six innings and struck out five. The Aggies improved to 18-22 on the season.
