Baseball Recap: April 21

Southern Claws Rattlers, 16-2

Florida A&M's woes continue as they dropped a 16-2 decision to Southern, Wednesday evening at Lee-Hines Field.

SU (14-14) tallied game high 16 hits, while FAMU (7-23-1) only managed seven hits.

The Rattlers were led by Darryl Evans, who went three-for-four from the plate, scoring one run.

Thomas Willis led the Jaguars as he went a perfect three-for-three from the plate, scoring two runs with one RBI.

Belfred Pryer (3-2) picked up the win for SU allowing six hits, one earned run and striking out two in fiving innings, while Steven Dollar (3-5) took the loss for FAMU as he gave up nine hits, 10 earned runs and striking out three in four innings on the mound.

Central Florida Tops B-CU, 6-2

Central Florida (26-14) won for the third time over B-CU this season with a 6-2 victory Wednesday night.

Three B-CU singles produced the first run of the game in the top of the first stanza. DJ Leonard singled, Jeremy Davis singled and Ryan Durrence had an RBI single scoring Leonard for the early 1-0 lead.

UCF took a 2-1 lead in the fifth off Wildcat starter Julio Morales with a two-out RBI double by Beau Taylor. The Knights' RBI leader Chris Duffy had a run-scoring single in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1.  The Knights broke open the game with two unearned runs off Juan Perez in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.  UCF scored two more in the eighth to go ahead 6-2.

Georgetown Too Much For Hornets

Corbin Blakey had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Georgetown to a 12-1 win over Delaware State at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 11-20. The Hoyas improved to 19-18.

Georgetown opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning off DSU starter Shane Foreman (1-5). Blakey had a two-run single in the inning.

The Hoyas added three runs in the third, highlighted by Erick Fernandez's two-run homer.

Delaware State scored its lone run in the fourth to pull to within 7-1. Abe Eubank reached base on an error to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out double by Warren Stimpson.

Hawks Fall At Bucknell, 11-4

Bucknell scored four runs each in the second and sixth innings to defeat Maryland Eastern Shore, 11-4, at Depew Field Wednesday.

The Bison (18-25) had three players with two hits, led by Ben Allen who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored. UMES (2-33) got hits from eight players including a blast off the bat of junior Bryan Chaikowsky over the batter's eye in center field.

Bucknell got on the board first in the second inning, taking a 4-0 lead. B.J. LaRosa highlighted the frame with a two-out bases-loaded double down the right-field line, scoring Drew Constable, Dave Duffett and Scott Glass.

Andy Brouse led off the Bison third with a solo shot to left, but the Hawks responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Freshman Tre-von Johnson powered his third home run of the season out to left to make it 5-1.

With two outs in the inning freshman Donnie Haines doubled to center, plating Chaikowsky from second. Junior Luis Mena followed with a single to cut the deficit to 5-3.

NSU Drops Two to Longwood

Brant Jones went 5-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored to help Longwood sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Norfolk State, 5-4 and 8-2 on Wednesday at Bolding Stadium.

The Lancers improved to 19-16 while NSU falls to 12-18-1.

In game one, the Lancers scored four in the second inning and held off a late NSU charge. In game two, Longwood's Lance Harting pitched a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Robbie Bailey and Casey Havers each hit a two-run single in Longwood's four-run second inning in the opener. The Spartans cut their deficit in half thanks to RBI doubles by Chris Joyce and Brandon Hairston in the top of the third.

The Lancers scored a key run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Jones' sacrifice fly. The run came after an infield single and a pair of walks by NSU reliever Jordan Egan loaded the bases.

Joyce paced NSU with a 3-for-5, three-RBI performance in the opener. Joyce's three RBI match season high. Chris Warren added a pair of hits.

Jason Barker took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year. He gave up eight hits and four runs in five innings. Chris Briere (5-4) got the win with seven solid innings for Longwood. He fanned seven.

In game two, Hairston launched his team-leading seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to right field, for a 1-0 NSU lead in the top of the second. The Lancers tied it in the bottom of the second, but NSU pulled ahead in the third on a run-scoring single by John Rasberry.

But Harting held NSU hitless over the final four innings, and the Lancers' offense came to life. Jones and David Smiy had RBI singles in the third to give Longwood a 3-2 edge. Scott Kimble's sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 4-2, and Robby Newman broke the game open with a three-run homer in the fifth.
