Hoosier, Speciale Pace Navy To 11-3 Win Over UMES
Navy's Mike Hoosier went 2-for-5 with five runs driven in and Michael Speciale tallied two home runs to lead the Midshipmen past Maryland Eastern Shore, 11-3, in non-conference action at Hawks Stadium Wednesday.
Hoosier belted a three-run home run over the right-field wall in the first inning and added a two-run single in the visitors' five-run third to help the Mids (22-13) complete a season-series sweep of UMES (2-29).
Speciale also launched a two-run homer to left in the third and solo shot over the left-center field fence in the fourth.
Junior J.J. Corriveau was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the fifth and freshman Donnie Haines tallied a run-scoring single in the inning earlier to pace the seven-hit Hawks' offense.
Haines (0-7) started the game on the mound for UMES and was roughed up, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks in two innings.
Joel Rinehart (1-0) earned the win as the predetermined starter after just two innings. He surrendered one unearned run on two hits and struck out two. He was followed by five Navy pitchers who combined to limit the Hawks to five hits and two earned runs. Midshipmen hurlers fanned eight on the day and issued one walk.
Andrew Hahn and Matt Curley singled and walked, respectively, to set the stage for Hoosier's blast in the first with one out.
The Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Phil Vaughn and Corriveau hit consecutive singles with Vaughn moving to third on a double-play ball and eventually scoring on an error by Curley at second.
Curley singled to start the third inning and went to third base on an Alex Azor double to right field. Both runners scored on the base hit up the middle by Hoosier for a 5-1 lead. After Hoosier stole second, Speciale bomb lengthened the Navy lead to six runs.
Down 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Tre-von Johnson recorded an infield single to the pitcher and twice advanced on wild pitches from left-hander Chris Murray. Johnson scored on Haines' single through the right side with two outs.
UMES cut the lead to 10-3 in the fifth when Lorenzo Christy coaxed a walk and went to second on a balk by righty Luke Roberts. Christy scored on the two-out double to the gap in left center, for the Hawks' final run of the day.
