Edward Waters Holds Off FAMU, 12-9

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 13)  - The Florida A&M Baseball Team ninth inning rally was not enough as Edward Waters College edged the Rattlers, 12-9, Tuesday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.

FAMU (6-19-1) outhit the EWC (21-17) 19-17.

The Rattlers were led by Jimmie Terrell, who went four-for-five from plate scoring two runs with three RBIs.

Bryan Joseph and Brian Fitzpatrick led the Tigers as they both finished with three hits each.

Matt Geiger  (1-0) got the win for EWC as he gave up 19 hits, nine earned runs and striking out three in three innings, while Miguel Parga (2-4) took the loss for FAMU, allowing 13 hits, six earned runs and striking out two in five innings.

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and three runs in top of the second inning.

FAMU got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a Jimmie Terrell homer to leftfield.  

EWC built a 11-4 lead as they scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and one run in the top of the fifth inning, while FAMU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Tigers would score a run in the top of the ninth inning as Joeshual Velez singled up the middle scoring Bryce Green, giving EWC a 12-4 lead. 

FAMU would score five runs in the bottom of the ninth as Scott Sheplak singled to the right side scoring Courtney Goner.   Then a Terrell single to the pitcher would score Elliott Bonner, followed by a Randon Pinknet sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Shaw.  Sheplak would then score on a Darius Washington single up the middle, followed by a Reginald Grant single scoring Terrell for the 12-9 finally.

The Rattlers will concluded their three-game home stand on Wednesday, April 14 as they will take on Southwestern Athletic Conference member Alabama State in a 1 p.m., matchup.

Hornets Fall In First State Rivalry

Dover, Del. (Apr. 13, 2010) --- Delaware completed a three-game season sweep of Delaware State with a 13-8 win over the Hornets in a steady drizzle at Soldier Field today.

The Hens snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 15-14 on the season, while the Hornets dropped their second straight to fall to 8-19.

Todd Menchaca was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead Delaware's 13-hit attack. Carlos Alonso was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Hens.

Tony Gatto had two hits and three RBI for the Hornets.

The score was 3-3 before Delaware scored nine unanswered runs to take control of the game.

Delaware State scored first when Gatto singled to lead off the second inning. He advanced to third on a double by Mike Rizzuto and scored on a ground out by Joey Babuca.

Delaware answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Ryan Cuneo singled in Chris Branigan with the Hens' first run. UD pulled ahead 2-1 when Alonso crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Delaware State starter Shane Foreman. Pat Dameron singled in Cuneo with Delaware's third run.

The Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Gatto. Warren Stimpson, who singled to lead off the inning and Keith Hernandez scored on the hit.

The Hens scored three runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Menchaca doubled in the go-ahead run. Alonso drove home a run on a sacrifice fly, and the third run of the inning scored on a Delaware State error.

Delaware opened up a 10-4 lead after scoring four runs in the fifth. Menchaca smacked a solo homer over the right field fence and Steve Ulaky had a run-scoring double in the inning. The Hens also scored two runs on wild pitches.

The Hornets trailed 12-3 before scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gatto drove in his third run of the game on a ground out, and Mike Rizzuto brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Delaware State scored on a double by Hernandez and a UD passed ball in the eighth inning to pull to within 12-8.

Rizzuto, Hernandez and Scott Davis also had two hits for DSU.

UD reliever Michael O'Keefe (2-0) was the winning pitcher, while Foreman (1-4) suffered the loss for the Hornets.

Ospreys and Wildcats Go 11 Innings

The University of North Florida scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Wildcats 5-4 and earn the 900th career victory at UNF for veteran head coach Dusty Rhodes.

B-CU's Alejandro Sanchez ripped a two-out double to the wall in left field scoring Justin Hoyte who singled for the go-ahead run in the 11th inning to put B-CU up 4-3.

UNF (21-15) scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game 3-3 and the two teams were scoreless until the 11th inning.

Freshman RHP Patrick Goelz pitched five shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out five UNF batters leading the Wildcat pitchers. Reliever Juan Perez (1-3) pitched the final three innings and took the loss.

B-CU went ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning with Jeremy Davis (HBP) scored on a two-out RBI single by Emmanuel Castro to break the scoreless game.

The Wildcats went up 2-0 in the fifth, Jairo Acevedo leading off the inning with a walk. A Justin Hoyte sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by C. J. Lauriello scored Acevedo with the second run of the game.

Singles by Ryan Durrence and Peter O'Brien led to a run in the sixth inning putting B-CU up 3-0.

The Wildcats (19-14) next play in Miami Wednesday at Florida International.

Wright, Monarchs Topple Spartans

NORFOLK, Va. - Josh Wright homered and drove in five runs to help Old Dominion topple Norfolk State 20-5 on Tuesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, earning a season series split with the Spartans.

The Monarchs (16-21) scored nine runs in the first four innings to take a sizeable early lead, and the Spartans (11-13-1) could not keep up.

ODU scored three runs without benefit of a hit in the first inning off NSU starter Jordan Egan. Egan walked the first batter of the game and hit the next two, before a wild pitch scored the game's first run. A Chris Baker RBI groundout and a Chris Buss sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

NSU got a run back in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Wiggins. But an NSU error led to another ODU run in the second, and Wright hit a three-run homer in the third for a 7-1 Monarchs' lead.

A fielder's choice grounder and another NSU miscue helped ODU increase its lead to 9-1 after four innings. The Spartans rallied in the fifth as John Rasberry and Cameron Parsons hit RBI doubles and Brandon Hairston drove in another run with a groundout.

But the Monarchs scored 11 runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.

Baker was 3-for-6 with three RBI for ODU. Kenney Stoneback was also 3-for-6 and drove in two runs. Buss and Austin Wright also knocked in a pair of runs apiece.

Parsons, Wiggins and Juan Herrera had two hits each for the Spartans. Rasberry led the way with two RBI.

Egan was the losing pitcher after allowing seven runs, six earned, off just three hits in 2.1 innings. Phil McCarthy (1-2) got the win for ODU, allowing just one run and fanning seven in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Spartans hit the road for a three-game MEAC series at Bethune-Cookman this Saturday and Sunday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
