Mercer Drops Florida A&M, 13-2

 

Mercer handed the Florida A&M their seventh straight loss as the Bears defeated the Rattlers 13-2, Monday, afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.

FAMU (6-18-1) finished with six hits led by Derrick Shaw with two hits.

Mercer (20-17) tallied 14 hits, paced by both Jacob Tanis and John Moreland with three hits each.

Jacob Matthews (2-0) got the win for the Bears, allowing five hits, one earned run and striking out four in four innings on the mound, while Heath Blackburn (1-6) took the loss for the Rattlers as he gave up eight hits, three earned runs and striking out two in four innings.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in top of the first as Billy Burns scored on a Tanis single to center field. 

Mercer added to their lead in the top of the third inning as they converted five runs on five hits and one FAMU error to take a 6-0 lead.

Burns and Nick DiMauro added to the Bears lead in the top of the fourth inning as Burns scored on a Tanis ground out to second and DiMauro scoring on a Carroll ground out, giving the Mercer an 8-0 lead. 

The Rattlers put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Oscar Santalo scored of a wild pitch, cutting the Bears lead to 8-1.

Evan Boyd made the score 9-1 in favor of Mercer in the top of the fifth inning as he scored on a wild pitch. 

Mercer took a 13-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning as FAMU scored on a Scott Sheplak single to right field to score Shaw for the 13-2 finally.

FAMU will return to action on Tuesday, April 13 against Edward Waters College in a  2 p.m., bout at Moore-Kittles Field.
