Hornets Fall To Coppin In Series Finale

Dover, Del. (Apr. 11, 2010) --- Delaware State fell short in its bid for a three-game sweep of Coppin State this weekend. John Bergwall tossed a complete game and Dan Glieberman was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead the Eagles to a 6-4 win over the Hornets in the series finale at Soldier Field yesterday.

Coppin State opened the scoring when Derek Richards smacked a two-run homer off DSU starter Elliot Gardner in the top of the first inning. The Eagles stretched their lead to 3-0 on a run-scoring single by Glieberman in the second.

Delaware State tied the game with three runs in the third inning. The first scored on a Coppin State error. The Hornets tied the score on a two-run single by Mike Rizzuto.

The Hornets took their first lead of the game, 4-3, when freshman catcher Joey Babuca (Caesar Rodney HS) hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.

Coppin State regained the lead on run-scoring singles by Harry Williams and Dwight Robinson with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Robinson's hit gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

CSU tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.

Bergwall allowed four runs (one earned) and four hits, while striking out six to earn the win for the Eagles.

Reliever Joe Rush was the losing pitcher for Delaware State.

The Hornets return to action this Tuesday at home against Delaware. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

UMES Falls To Norfolk State On Walk-Off Single, 5-4

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State's Blaze Zeilman had a pinch-hit, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Maryland Eastern Shore, 5-4, at Marty L. Miller Field Sunday.

Zeilman's game-winning RBI base hit to right-center field scored Chris Joyce from third to give the Spartans (11-12-1, 4-5 MEAC) the series sweep of UMES (2-28, 1-7).

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) came on to shut down NSU and send the game into extra innings but couldn't. Zimmerman (0-3) faced five batters, four of which, reached base, on the way to the loss.

Chris Joyce drew a walk to start the frame and John Lynch laid down a perfect bunt for a single before Cameron Parsons sacrificed the runs to second and third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Zeilman came through with the game winner.

Phil Vaughn led the Hawks at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases while Donnie Haines chipped in with a two- run single in the Haws' three-run third inning that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead.

NSU, which outhit UMES, 10-6, got two hits apiece from Lynch, Ryan Wiggins and TiQuan Griffin. Chase Davenport (3-2) picked up the complete-game win, surrendering four earned runs. He struck out eight and walked three in 124 pitches.

UMES starter Karim Gonzalez earned a tough no decision in eight innings and 140 pitches. He gave up eight hits and three earned runs while walking five and fanning three.

Norfolk tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joyce scored on a Parsons groundout with two outs. Joyce single to start the inning and moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch.

UMES took a 4-3 advantage in the top of the third.

Shaquille Bagwell, who had two hits in three at-bats on the day, started the inning with an infield single. Vaughn then singled to center, advancing to second on a Griffin fielding error, setting up a second and third situation. After a flyout Tre-von Johnson singled to shortstop to cut the NSU lead to 3-2.

Johnson and Vaughn stole second a third on the next play and with two outs Haines delivered a two-out single to left for the lead.

The Hawks picked up a run in the top of the first as Vaughn drew a walk to open the inning, stole second and scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.

Norfolk State responded with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. John Rasberry walked and scored on a Lynch RBI single and Brandon Hairston reached on an error by Gonzalez, scoring on a Parsons sacrifice fly to right field.

The Spartans added a run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Wiggins and Griffin with one out. Griffin's two-bagger to right scored Wiggins.

UMES returns home to host Navy Wednesday at Hawks Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

Wildcats Complete Sweep Of Aggies

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman put together three solid innings to down the North Carolina A&T baseball team 13-3 Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Park.

Freshman Dario Little led the Aggies with two hits and a run scored. Freshman Alex Grubb added two RBI for the Aggies who dropped to 12-19 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

The reigning MEAC Champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats ran its record to 19-13 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Wildcats jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first before a six-run fourth inning put the game away for the Wildcats.

The six-run fourth came just before the Aggies were able to get to within a run of the Wildcats. Little and Nick Rogers led off the Aggies half of the fourth with walks. The Wildcats turned to relief pitcher Andrew Tilka.

Sophomore Xavier Macklin greeted him with an RBI double that scored Little although Rogers was thrown out at third. The Aggies were still able to score again as Grubb hit into a fielder's choice that resulted in Macklin scoring for a 3-2 Wildcats lead.

Grubb would provide an RBI single for the Aggies other run. The Aggies will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to play Virginia Tech at 5:30 p.m. The Aggies return home on Wednesday to play Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m.
