Roberts, Cowgill Lead VMI To Win Over UMES, 20-1

 

Sam Roberts hit two home runs and Coby Cowgill struck out nine in six innings as

VMI topped UMES, 20-1, at Gray-Minor Stadium Saturday.

The Keydets collected 23 hits, scoring in every inning except the eighth, to improve to 9-0 on the season. The Hawks, who were held to one hit for seven innings, fell to 0-10 with the loss.

Cowgill (2-0) allowed just one base hit and no walks in his 74-pitch outing while Karim Gonzalez absorbed the defeat for UMES, going five inning and surrendering 11 runs on 13 hits.

Up, 5-0, in the fourth inning, Roberts hit a solo shot to right field with two outs. Then, Cory Spangenberg reached on one the Hawks' seven errors on the day and came home on an RBI double down the left-field line by Garrett Sullivan that made it 7-0.

Roberts launched his second longball of the day in the fifth - again with two outs. Chase Worthington and

Andrew Montague led off the inning with a double and single, respectively, setting the stage for the three-run blast.

Roberts added a sacrifice fly to finish with five RBIs. Steele Myers replaced Roberts in the bottom of the sixth and came up with an RBI double and a three-run homer over the scoreboard in left-center field to open a 20-0 lead through seven frames. Myers also had a five-RBI game.

Junior right fielder Bryan Chaikowsky beat out a roller along the first-base line for an infield hit in the eight to give UMES its second base knock of the game. Senior Phil Vaughn had a single through the hole at shortstop in the third for the first.

UMES finally broke up the shutout in the ninth when sophomore Shaquille Bagwell tallied a pinch-hit double down the right-field line and was chased home on a Donnie Haines single.

UMES used two pitchers to follow Gonzalez. Senior Carl Huber faired the best, giving up two hits and fanning four in 1.1 innings.

Thirteen players had at least a hit and nine scored runs for VMI

The teams close the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
