HORNETS DROP TWIN-BILL TO ST. PETER'S

Dover, Del. (Mar. 20, 2010) --- Delaware State could not take advantage of a solid pitching performance by Zach Adkins in a 3-2 loss to St. Peter's in the first game of a doubleheader at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Peacocks completed the sweep with a 14-6 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Adkins allowed four hits and three runs, while striking out eight in 6.1 innings of work.

St. Peter's opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. The Hornets answered with two in their half of the third to tie the score. Mike Rizzuto drove in the first DSU run on a groundout. Back-to-back doubles by Abe Eubank and Ryan Haas produced the second run later in the inning.

The Peacocks scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Delaware State left two runners on base in the sixth and another in the seventh.

In the nightcap, St. Peter's pounded out 15 hits. Five Peacock players had at least two hits.

St. Peter's scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second to open up a 7-0 lead.

Delaware State scored its first run on a solo home run by Tony Gatto in the second. Gatto doubled in two runs in the Hornets' three-run seventh inning. The Dover High School product was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

The Hornets and Peacocks will play another doubleheader on Sunday at Soldier Field.

Rattlers vs. Wildcats - MEAC Series Opener at FAMU, B-CU Wins 11-1, 18-0

Tallahassee, Fla. -Bethune-Cookman opened the MEAC season with an 11-1 win in game one of the doubleheader over Florida A&M, winning for the sixth straight time in 2010.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Ryan Durrence home run to center field scoring Juan Perez who doubled. It was Durrence's fifth home run of 2010.

B-CU went ahead 3-0 in the third inning with Juan Perez leading off with a single.  Then on a hit and run single to right field by Matt Wright and two Rattlers throwing errors on the play, Perez scored from first base.

Bethune-Cookman (10-9, 1-0 MEAC) scored two more runs in the fourth inning engineering a steal play with runners on first and second, then scoring a throwing error and a passed ball helped B-CU score two making the count 5-0..

The Wildcats used the long ball to score three runs in the fifth inning with Durrence hitting a tape measure home run to deep left field for his second home run of the game. Two batters later, Jeremy Davis ripped a home run to left center for an 8-0 lead.

Davis hit his second home run of the game in the seventh inning to make the score 11-0. FAMU hit a solo home run in the sixth of reliever Justin Dahl to make the score 11-1.

In MEAC play, a 10-run lead after seven inning or five inning (in a seven-inning game) ends the game.

B-CU Starter LHP Ali Simpson (3-1) earned the win pitching five innings allowing 4 hits, striking out seven and walking none in a solid start for the Wildcats.

GAME TWO - B-CU 18, FAMU 0  - Five Homers - Ryan Gonzalez One-Hitter Lead Win

The Wildcats hit five home runs in game two including back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third inning by Ryan Durrence (third home run of the doubleheader), Peter O'Brien, and Emmanuel Castro. Durrence's blast was a three-run bomb. DJ Leonard and Byron White also hit home runs in the win with B-CU out-hitting FAMU 18-1.

Rayan Gonzalez (3-2) pitched four innings of one-hit ball for the win. Gabriel Hernendez pitched the fifth and final inning of the game shortened by the MEAC 10-run rule in a seven-inning game.

VAUGHN, JOHNSON LEAD UMES IN LOSSES TO SAVANNAH STATE

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior Phil Vaughn and freshman Tre-von Johnson combined to hit 10-for-14 at the plate but it wasn't enough as Maryland Eastern Shore fell to Savannah State, 13-3 and 3-2, in doubleheader at Tiger Field Saturday.

The Tigers (6-11) used a nine-run first inning to put the opener out of reach and scored the game- winning run in the bottom of the sixth of the second game when pinch runner Kendrick Jones swiped home to complete a double steal.

The Hawks, who outhit SSU in the second game, 8-6, dropped to 0-17 with the sweep.

Vaughn was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored, a walk and a pair of stolen bases in the first game and followed that up with another three singles and two steals in the nightcap.

Johnson hit 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two runs driven in for Game 1 and was 3-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base in the second contest.

Savannah State manufactured a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2.

Julius Green, who had reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on an error by Lucas

Koenig at first base and moved third on a passed ball charged to Luis Mena . Kevin Herlihy put the Tigers on the board with an RBI groundout to short.

UMES knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Johnson shot a one-out single to left and went to second when pitcher Mark Sherrod overthrew first base on a pick-off attempt.

Vaughn singled to left to move Johnson to third and J.J. Corriveau's sacrifice fly tied things up with two outs in the inning. Vaughn then stole second and went to third on a balk but Bryan Chaikowsky struck out, ending the inning.

SSU took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. Darien Campbell started the frame with a double down the right-field line and scored on a sac fly to right by Dexter Kelley with one man out.

Savannah State extended its advantage with a run in the sixth when Eddie Barkley doubled and was pinch run for by Jones. Jones then moved to third on a flyout and Herlihy walked, putting men on first and second. Using heads-up base running, Herlihy got himself in a rundown long enough for Jones to swipe home and a two-run lead.

UMES scratched together a second run in the seventh when Johnson singled and stole two bases - including home - but Vaughn bounced into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Both starting pitchers went the entire seven innings with Mark Sherrod improving to 2-0 with the win. Sophomore John DesChamps took the loss for UMES. Sherrod gave up eight hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks and DesChamps (0-4) scattered six hits and two earned. He fanned four and walked one.

Vaughn led off the first inning of Game 2 with a double to right and stole third. Johnson lifted a fly to center that scored Vaughn for a 1-0 UMES lead.

Savannah State stormed back in the bottom of the first with nine runs on five hits and four errors, two each by sophomore second baseman Shaquille Bagwell and freshman pitcher Donnie Haines .

Jonathan Ross made it 10-1 with a one-out bomb to left-center field in the fourth.

The Hawks put together a two-out rally to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth. Chaikowsky beat out an infield roller to short for a hit and stole second. He moved to third when Chris Arnold's throw sailed into center field. Chaikowsky scored on a throwing error by Bubba Green at short to make it 10-2.

That was as clod as UMES got as SSU tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the eighth for the final margin.

Michael Allegretti (2-2) went eight innings to pick up the win for the Tigers and Haines took his fourth loss of the year in four innings for the Hawks, giving up 10 hits and eight runs.

Kelley led SSU at the plate in the doubleheader going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three steals.
