After scoring 56 runs in the previous four games, Delaware State was held to six hits in a 5-2 loss to Norfolk State in the Savannah State University Tournament this morning.
The Hornets (3-3) managed just six singles against three Norfolk State pitchers.
The Spartans opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning.
Delaware State tied the score in the top of the fourth when starting pitcher Ryan Haas drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Jose Portela, then scored on a single by Joey Babuca.
Norfolk State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
The Hornets cut Norfolk State's lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth. Brandon Crist was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He was sacrificed to second base, and scored on a two-out single by C.J. Bell.
Delaware State was held to one hit in the last four innings.
Norfolk State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Haas was tagged with the loss for the Hornets. He allowed nine hits and three runs-two earned-while striking out nine Norfolk State hitters and walking just one in six innings.
Delaware State is scheduled to play its 2010 home opener this Wednesday (Mar. 3) against Lincoln (Pa.). The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at Noon at DSU's Soldier Field.
