Florida A&M Rattlers Edge Delaware State, 8-6

Florida A&M picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Delaware State, 8-6 in non conference action in their first game of the SSU Baseball Classic, Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.

FAMU (1-3) finished the a game high 12 hits with Derrick Shaw finishing three -for-four from the plate with two RBIs, while scoring one run.

DSU (2-2) finished with two hits with Brandon Crist leading the way with a team high two hits.

Miguel Parga (1-1) picked up the win for the Rattlers, allowing two hits, three earned runs, and striking out two in six innings of work, while Steven Dollar (1) picked up his first save of the season giving up two hits in three innings of work.

Zack Adkins (1-1) received the loss for the Hornets allowing ten hits, six earned runs and striking out six in five innings of work.  

Keith Hernandez gave DSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as he scored on a Ryan Haas fielder's choice.

FAMU regain the lead in the bottom of the first innings as both Darryl Evans and Toby Adeyemi scored on a Shaw double, giving the Rattler a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets took the lead in the top of the third as Hernandez scored on a Tony Gatto sacrifice fly to left field.  Then both Haas and Mike Rizzuto would score on a FAMU infielder's error, giving DSU a 4-2 lead.

Adeyemi cut the Hornet's lead to 4-3 as he scored on a Shaw single in the bottom of the  third inning.

 FAMU recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth  as Steve Cunningham scored on a Jared Jeffries double, then Jeffries would score on an Adeyemi single, giving the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mykel Benson would hit into a fielder's choice scoring Shaw, making the score 6-4 in favor of the Rattlers.

Both Jose Portela and Crist would score in the top of the sixth inning to tie game at 6-6 for the Hornets, with Portela scoring on a lead off homer and Crist scoring on a passed ball.

Cunningham gave FAMU a 7-6 in the bottom the seventh inning as he scored on an Adeyemi sacrifice bunt.

The Rattlers scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the 8-6 win as Elliott Bonner scored on an Adeyemi fielder's choice.

FAMU will conclude the SSU Classic in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27 as they will take on Savannah State at 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. bought with Norfolk State at Tiger Field.
