Hornets Pound N.C. Central For First Win

Durham, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2010) --- Delaware State scored 11 runs in the fifth inning and nine in the fourth en route to a 26-2 victory over North Carolina Central in the Eagle Baseball Classic at the Durham Athletic Park this afternoon.

The Hornets pounded out 21 hits, including eight for extra bases, to even their record at 1-1 this season. Eleven players had at least one hit for DSU.

Troy Drummond was 4-for-5 with a career-high seven runs batted in, while Abe Eubank was 2-for-6 with five RBI. Other hitting stars included Tony Gatto, who had four hits in five at bats, with two runs batted in. Newcomer Keith Hernandez was 2-for-5 with three RBI.

North Carolina Central opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second, the Hornets put six runs on the board in the top of the third. Drummond and Eubank each had two-run doubles in the inning, while Gatto doubled in a run and Hernandez singled in another.

The Hornets opened up a 15-1 lead after scoring nine runs in the fourth. Drummond doubled in two more runs, while Eubank plated two on a single. Mike Rizzuto also singled in a run in the inning. Delaware State sent 13 men to the plate in the fourth.

The runs kept coming for DSU in the fifth. The Hornets sent 15 men to the plate, scoring 11 times on nine hits. Drummond had his third two-run double of the game, and also singled in a run in the inning. Warren Stimpson also doubled in two, while Hernandez, Gatto, Elliot Gardner and Ryan Haas each had run-scoring singles.

Delaware State starter Shane Foreman was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and two runs, while striking out three in four innings. Haas pitched four innings of scoreless relief, while Joe Rush tossed one shutout inning.

White's Quality Start Not Enough; Hawks Fall At William & Mary, 4-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Freshman Tre-von Johnson was 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and three RBIs as Maryland Eastern Shore built a 7-1 lead through four-and-a-half innings but William and Mary came from behind to defeat the Hawks, 11-7, at Plumeri Park Saturday.

The Tribe (2-0) used a five-run eighth inning to complete the comeback after the UMES bats came alive in the early going.

Junior-college transfers Luis Mena and Nick Wiggins  also had multiple-hit efforts in their second career games. Mena hit 2-for-4 with a run scored while Wiggins went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Freshman Donnie Haines absorbed the loss for the Hawks, surrendering the game-winning runs in the eighth. Bower tied the game, 7-7 with an RBI groundout after Derek Lowe led things off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch.

Ohio State Pounds Rattlers, 16-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 20)  - Florida A&M team dropped a 16-1 decision to Ohio State in their second game of the UNF Baseball Classic, Saturday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.

FAMU (0-2) finished with eight hits with Jared Jeffries and Stavone Martin both finished with two hits each.

OSU (2-0) finished the game with 16 hits with Michael Stephens finishing with four hits.

Brett McKinley (1-0) picked up the win for the Buckeyes as gave up four hits and struck out eight in five innings of work, while Heath Blackburn (0-1) took the loss for the Rattlers, allowing seven hits and striking out three in six innings of work.

Spartans Falter Late in 7-3 Loss to Villanova

NORFOLK, Va. - Matt Fleishman and Justin Bencsko combined for six hits and five runs batted in as Villanova surged late to a 7-3 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Wildcats (2-0) broke a 2-2 tie by scoring once in the seventh, then put it away with four more in the eighth to turn back the Spartans (0-2).

Kevin Wager got Villanova on the board with a two-run single in the third off of NSU starter Chase Davenport. Both base runners who scored reached base after being hit by Davenport pitches.

The Spartans fought back to tie the game thanks to freshman Shane Hoggard. Hoggard hit RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings for the first two hits and RBI of his career, knotting the score at 2-all.

But Villanova took the lead for good on Fleishman's RBI single off Davenport in the top of the seventh. The Wildcats then tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth off the Spartan bullpen. Bencsko hit a two-run single and Fleishman stroked a two-run double to give the Wildcats a cushion.

Davenport (0-1) got the loss despite a strong outing. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings while striking out a career-high seven batters.

Fleishman had three hits and three RBI, and Bencsko had three hits and two RBI. Wager and Marlon Calbi added two hits each for Villanova.

#23 UCLA Beats Wildcats 10-3 In MLB Urban Classic

Compton, California -#23 ranked UCLA and pitching ace Trevor Bauer beat the Wildcats 10-3 Saturday night at the MLB Urban Classic.

Justin Hoyte's two run homer to right field in the third inning cut the UCLA lead to 4-2. The Bruins (2-0) built the early lead as B-CU starter Julio Morales (0-1) walked six batters and hit two others in 3.1 innings worked.

DJ Leonard hit a pinch hit home run to left field off Bauer in the sixth inning making the score 8-3. C. J. Lauriello, B-CU's top returning hitter from last season (.403) was taken to the hospital for tests Saturday night and his status is day to day. C. J. started in LF and was 0-2 vs. UCLA before coming out of the game.

UCLA out-hit the Wildcats 9-4 and B-CU's offense was limited to the two home runs and two other singles (Ryan Durrence and Peter O'Brien). O'Brien showcased his throwing arm with two assists in the game.
