Florida A&M defeated Norfolk State, 15-2 in seven innings, Saturday morning at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark in the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) Baseball Tournament.
FAMU (24-29) tallied a game high 15 hits and were led by Chris Fullman who posted two home runs and three hits.
NSU (22-23) finished with six hits. Jerrod Farley was 2-for-2 in his final game as a Spartan. Chris Joyce and Juan Herrera were both 1-for-3.
Adam Gordon (2-1) picked up the win for the Rattlers as he gave up six hits, two earned runs and struck out six in seven innings, while Ryan Davis (1-3) took the loss for Norfolk State, giving ups five hits, five earned runs and striking out one in three innings.
The Spartans scored their runs in the top of the first as Herrera singled to right field scoring Drew Sutmiller. Herrera would score on a Joyce double down the right field line, giving the NSU a 2-0 lead,
FAMU captured the lead in the bottom of the second on a Fullman three-run home run scoring Tim Schalch and Stavone Martin, to give the Rattlers a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Darryl Evans doubled to lead off the innings and then would score on Spartan’s infielders error. Schalch scored on a Derrick Shaw single up the middle, giving the Rattlers a 5-2 lead.
The Rattlers padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Tobi Adeyemi scored on a Gabriel Rodriquez single, then a Schalch two-run single up centerfield, scored Rodriquez and Fulman, to increase the Florida A&M lead to 8-2.
Fullman capped a seven-run sixth inning with a two-out, three-run homer to the same spot as his first round-tripper for the 15-2 final. The game was stopped after seven innings due to the 12-run mercy rule.
The Rattlers will now a wait to play the loser of the North Carolina A&T versus Bethune Cookman game, in a 6 p.m. elimination game.
Admission for the 2009 MEAC Baseball Championship is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages four and older, students and senior citizens. Ticket prices for the entire tournament are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages four and older, students and senior citizens. Children ages three (3) and under are admitted free.
