DSU Baseball Completes Sweep Of Coppin State

Delaware State (13-12-1, 5-1 MEAC) completed its sweep of the Coppin State Eagles (0-17, 0-8 MEAC) with two-straight victories on Sunday, April 5 at Joe Cannon Stadium in Baltimore, Md. The Hornets shut out the Eagles, 13-0, during the first game of the Sunday twin-bill and put up 20 runs in a 20-4 win during game two.

The two victories improved DSU’s conference record to 5-1 and put the Hornets’ record over .500 for the first time since March 8.

On the day, Delaware State registered 25 hits and out-scored Coppin State, 33-4. Jared Lineweaver finished the day going 4-for-9 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lineweaver scored both of his runs during the second game of the day. Senior Ross Babineaux scored a team-high six runs, going 3-for-7, including a double with three RBI. Babineaux increased his current hitting streak to eight games. Designated hitter Ryne Mailen tallied two home runs on Sunday, driving in four runs and hitting 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Playing in only the first game, Mailen recorded a slugging percentage of 2.667 versus the Eagles. Freshman Warren Stimpson went 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored versus Coppin State. The Blue Bell, Pa., native came in as a pinch hitter in both games, reaching base in each of his three plate appearances of the day.  Junior Abe Eubank notched his third home run of the season with a three-run blast during the first inning of game two. Eubank notched a team-high five RBI on the day.

During the first game, senior right-hander Josh Schmidt (4-3, 5.10 ERA) earned his fourth win of the season, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out six in seven innings of action. The Middletown, Del., native made his seventh start of the season, increasing his strikeout total to a team-high 50 on the year.

Coppin State’s Kallen Fletcher suffered the loss, giving up 13 runs on 12 hits in seven innings of action. Fletcher struck out two Hornet batters while walking 11.

In game two, senior Justin Bittner (4-1, 4.72 ERA) was credited with the victory, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings. The Newark, Del., native struck out four CSU batters, walking one.

Eagle hurler Jonathan Reynolds picked up the loss, giving up 15 runs (five earned) on six hits in six innings of action. The sophomore pitcher walked seven DSU hitters while striking out none.

Offensively, Coppin State was led by Francisco Rosado, who finished the hitting 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored. Rosado accounted for four of the team’s 12 total hits.

Delaware State will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to face the Florida A&M Rattlers in three-game weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 11. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
