Elliott Earns First Victory In 3-1 Win Over Delaware

Picking up his first-career victory, freshman right-hander Jordan Elliott led Delaware State (17-15-1) to a 3-1 win over the Delaware Blue Hens (22-15) on Thursday at Soldier Field. Making his sixth start of the season, Elliott struck out five Blue Hen batters in six innings of action.

The Hornets scored three runs on seven hits in the contest, including a pair of home runs by Justin Bittner and Abe Eubank. Bittner, who went 1-for-4 on the day, got DSU on the board early with his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the second.

Eubank crushed his sixth long ball of the year in the bottom of the sixth, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Medford, Ore., native also registered his fourth double of the season. Catcher Wynton Weather tallied the third RBI of the game following a single up the middle in the bottom of the second. Weather finished the day hitting 1-for-3.

Elliott (1-1) allowed no runs on two hits in six innings pitched versus the Blue Hens. The Milford, Del., native held UD to a .105 team batting average, dropping his ERA to 3.90 on the year. Anthony Gibbons came in for relief of Elliott in the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one in two innings of action. Closer Brandon Penick earned his third save of the season, retiring three-straight UD hitters in the top of the ninth to preserve DSU’s 3-1 victory.

Delaware’s Brian Rorick (3-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings of action.

The Blue Hens’ lone run came on a solo shot by Jared Olson off of Gibbon in the top of the seventh. Olson finished the day hitting 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Delaware State will host the North Carolina A&T Aggies in a three-game conference series beginning on Saturday, April 25. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
