MEAC Announces Baseball Weekly Honors

Norfolk State’s Chris Joyce earned MEAC Player of the Week honors in baseball, the league announced on Monday. Delaware State’s Dan Perkins was named the Pitcher of the Week, while North Carolina A&T’s Marquis Riley earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

 

Joyce (3B, 6-0, Jr., Chesapeake, Virginia) helped the Spartans to a 5-1 mark last week. He finished with a .444 hitting percentage with eight hits on 18 attempts. He recorded three home runs, two doubles and 12 RBI. He also added five putouts and 12 assists from the third base position.

 

Perkins (P, 6-4, Sr., Newark, Delaware) picked up a win against Norfolk State last week. He pitched seven innings, with an ERA of 0.00, and struck out seven of the 26 batters faced in his fourth complete game of the season. This is the fifth straight week that Perkins has earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

 

Riley (2B, 5-11, Fr., Efland, North Carolina) batted .550 (11-for-20) last week to aid the Aggies to a 3-2 mark. In a three-game series sweep of Savannah State, Riley tallied three home runs, two doubles and seven RBI.  He added 13 putouts and 15 assists during the five game stretch.

 

Other Top Performers:

 

Jason Barker (NSU) pitched 11 innings for the week and picked up two wins for the Spartans.

 

Bryan Chaikowsky (UMES) tallied a home run and three RBI for the Hawks last week.

 

Karim Gonzalez (UMES) struck out seven of 37 batters he faced to pick up the win against Florida A&M.

 

Darryl Evans (FAMU) tallied three home runs, one triple, one double and 10 RBI in five outings for the Rattlers.

 

Pat Hercinger (UMES) hit .471 with one double and seven RBI in five games last week for the Hawks.  

 

C.J. Lauriello (B-CU) finished 6-of-13 with one home run, two doubles and three RBI in four games.

 

Daniel Lee (FAMU) posted one home run, one double, and seven RBI for the Rattlers.

 

Xavier Macklin (NCAT) hit .500 with two homers, two triples, one double and seven RBI in a three-game series against Savannah State.

 

Esterlin Paulino (NCAT) struck out a season high 10 batters in a win over Savannah State.

 

Mike Rizzuto (DSU) went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in a win over Norfolk State.

 

Eric Thomas (B-CU) pitched nine innings for the week to earn the win over Coppin State.
