Delaware State (16-14-1, 8-3 MEAC) split its doubleheader with the Norfolk State Spartans (12-17, 6-8 MEAC), winning the first game 11-0 (seven innings) and dropping the second, 6-5, on Saturday, April 18 at Marty L. Miller Field.
The Hornets were led by Mike Rizzuto, who hit .625 (5-of-8) on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. The Golden, Colo., native notched a team-high five hits, including his first-career triple. Troy Drummond only saw action in Game One of the Saturday twin-bill but, batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored versus the Spartans. Abe Eubank registered his fifth home run of the season, going 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored on the day.
On the mound, senior Dan Perkins continued his dominance in conference play, hurling a complete-game shutout to his fourth win of the season. Perkins allowed no runs on three his while striking out seven Spartan batters during the Hornets’ 11-0 win in Game One. Perkins has not allowed an earned run in his last 33 innings pitched.
Five Hornets registered at least one RBI during Game One, while six difference DSU players accounted for the team’s 11 runs. Rizzuto and Eubank led all Hornets with two RBI in the contest.
Norfolk’s Drew Suttmiller accounted for all three NSU hits during the lopsided contest.
Quinn Bright was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs (all unearned) on nine hits while striking out three.
In Game Two, DSU gave up five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to fall behind, 6-2. The Hornets rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs and cutting the Spartan lead to 6-5. However, DSU could not muster the final run to draw the game even, losing 6-5.
Josh Schmidt suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched.
Eight different DSU batters registered a hit in the contest. Eubank went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ryne Mailen came in as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh, driving two runs with his first double of the season.
NSU’s Chase Davenport picked up the victory, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of action. The Spartan starter struck out five DSU batters.
The Hornets will close out their three-game series with Norfolk State on Sunday, April 19. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
