Maryland Tops Hawks, 12-3

Sophomore shortstop Remo Orsini went 2-for-4 with a run scored but Maryland overpowered Maryland Eastern Shore, 12-3, at Shipley Field Wednesday.

The Terrapins scored six runs in the second and four more in the third on their way to a sweep of the two-game series with the Hawks. Maryland also defeated UMES March 11 at home, 11-4.

The win for the Terps (13-15) is their second in as many games, while the Hawks (6-22) have dropped three in a row.

Maryland center fielder A.J. Casario was 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and came a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Casario's counterpart, junior Phil Vaughn was 1-for-4 with an RBI and his team-leading 16th stolen base. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Pat Hercinger's own 10-game streak was snapped, as he was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

Nine Terps had at least one hit and five had two or more in the victory.

Maryland jumped on UMES starter Russel Deutschmann for six runs in the second, an inning highlighted by Casario's three-run shot to center field to make it 5-0. Will Greenberg drove in Mike Murphy with a sacrifice fly to center for a six-run deficit before John DesChamps relieved Deutschmann after five outs.

The Hawks got two runs back in the top of the third. After consecutive singles by Orsini and Vaughn to start the inning, Josh Dunham walked to load the bases with no outs. Hercinger followed with a foul flyout to first that scored Orsini and Vaughn stole home as part of a double steal with Dunham.

A throwing error from DesChamps triggered another big inning in the Maryland third as the Terps took a 10-2 advantage. With runners on first and third with no outs, Matt Murakami drove in his second run of the night with a single to center.

David Poutier lined into a double play on a bunt to Hercinger, but Casario tallied an RBI double and Logan Welch and Will Greenberg also drove in runs for the hosts.

The Hawks' third run came off Sander Beck, Maryland's third of six on the game. UMES loaded the bases with one out when Vaughn pushed Jorge Pichardo home with a fielder's choice to second.

Maryland got the run back in their half of the inning and Casario belted his second homer of the game in the seventh, again to center, to account for the final margin.

Deutschmann (0-5) took the loss for UMES, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk. Maryland starter Scott Swinson went two innings giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts to improve to 2-4.

UMES faces Norfolk State in a three-game set at home this weekend, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
