Senior captain Pat Hercinger went 2-for-4 in game one and belted his first career home run in the game two, but Maryland Eastern Shore fell, 15 -5 and 6-3, to Mount Saint Mary's at Hawks Stadium Wednesday.
The losses for the Hawks (5-19) end a three-game winning streak, while the sweep for the Mount (8-9) gives it wins in three straight.
Josh Dunham and Jorge Pichardo also each had two hits apiece in game one for UMES. Ben Vasko added a hit and three RBI in the first game.
Mount Saint Mary's starter Costa Kapothanasis (3-2) went seven strong innings, allowing four runs and seven hits to get the win. Russel Deutschmann pitched the first four frames for the Hawks and allowed seven runs on 10 hits. He dropped to 0-4 on the year.
The Mount jumped on Deutschmann early to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With two on and no outs, Matt Staso drove Tommy Flynn and Jacob Darr home with a double to left.
Following a Kyle Kane single moving Staso to third, Shane Eyler added to the lead with an RBI groundout.
The Hawks cut the lead to two in their half when Dunham walked and Hercinger knocked him in with a triple to left.
Leading 4-1 in the fourth, MSM Josh Winter had a triple of his own with one on and scored on a throwing error by Phil Vaughn to make it 6-1. Flynn then singled to left, bringing in Zach Helman to push the lead to six.
The Hawks tallied three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit in half at 8-4.Vaughn doubled to left center field scoring Remo Orsini from first. Then with two outs, Vasko doubled to center, scoring Elliott Alston and Vaughn.
The Mount pulled away over the final four innings with its biggest inning of four runs coming in the ninth.
Seven Mount players had multiple-hit games in the opener. Flynn led MSM, going 4-for-6 with three runs. Staso had three RBI.
Hercinger put the Hawks on top, 1-0, in the first inning of game two with his blast to left, staking lefty Brian White to an early lead in his first start of the season.
White (0-2) kept the visitors off the board until the third when Darr doubled to left center with one out, scoring Mike Matta to knot the game at one.
The Mount seized the lead with four runs in the fifth off of White and reliever Cameron Zimmerman.
Alex Andrews started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Darr knocked him in a base hit to left to make it 2-1.Staso followed doubling home Darr before Kane tripled to push the lead to 4-1.
Zimmerman came in and allowed Kane to score on a passed ball by Michael Guy. White threw 4.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out two.
The Hawks mounted a threat in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice for a 5-3 score. Orsini doubled and Vaughn reached with a bunt single, putting runners n the corners with no one out.
Mount starter Marshall Thomason (1-1) threw a wild pitch, allowing Orsini to come in from third.
Two consecutive groundouts, the last by Hercinger, brought Vaughn home.
That was as close as UMES got, though. Mount Saint Mary's tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to ensure the win.
Thomason got the win, going 4.2 innings while surrendering three runs on four hits and five walks. He also had four strikeouts.
Darr was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two knocked in in the game two win. Hercinger had a pair of RBIs in the second game for UMES.
The Hawks travel to Delaware State for a three-game MEAC series Saturday and Sunday.
