Burgos Leads Wildcats to 9-3 Win Over FIU

B-CU starting pitcher Hiram Burgos went eight innings, striking out nine, allowing eight hits and three runs for the win with Bethune-Cookman (11-13) cooling off red-hot Florida International University (15-5)  - 9-3 Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

 

FIU came into the game with a seven-game winning streak, scoring 57 runs in four wins last weekend.

 

Burgos (2-3) tied his career-high for strikeouts in a game with 9 and got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth inning with a strikeout. Reliever Roman Lancara struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth to close out the win for the 'Cats. 

 

The Wildcats pounded out 15 hits in the first five innings and led 3-0 after one inning and 9-0 after five stanzas. Senior CF Jose Ortiz was 3-4 with a triple and a RBI and five other players had two hits each: Patrick Jones, C. J. Lauriello, Emmanuel Castro, Peter O'Brien and Jeremy Davis (in his first start at 3B for B-CU this season) all had two hits in the contest.

 

B-CU next hosts South Florida, 5 p.m. start Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
