Rattlers Top B-CU in Second Game of Doubleheader

The Rattlers of FAMU snapped a 14-game four year losing streak to the Wildcats beating B-CU 6-4 in extra innings Saturday to win game two of the MEAC doubleheader. FAMU last beat Bethune-Cookman in baseball, March 3, 2004 in Tallahassee, 11-10.

"We thought we were down after the seven-game losing streak, this is worse. We made made every error there is (in the second game) and this is unnaceptable. Our seniors didn't play well, our freshmen didn't play well, it is unacceptable," said B-CU Coach Mervyl Melendez after the 6-4 loss. "Give FAMU credit, they played their hearts out and beat us."

FAMU (8-10, 1-1 MEAC) scored two runs in the top of the eight inning (second games of  MEAC double-headers are 7 inning games) after the Wildcats (9-13, 1-1) tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on Jose Ortiz' two-out run-scoring single to left center in the see-saw game. Florida A & M led 2-0 in the first, B-CU tied it at 2-2 scoring single runs in the first and second innings. Both teams scored runs in the 6th and 7th innings to force extra innings.

B-CU's Justin Dahl (0-2) pitched the eighth inning and took the loss allowing one earned run and three hits in the 8th. Freshman starter Ali Simpson pitched five innings and gave up one earned run and six hits as the Wildcats committed four errors in the second game (3 unearned FAMU runs).

The two teams wrap up the three-game MEAC series Sunday with a single, nine-inning game at 1 p.m.
