Marshall Takes Two From Delaware State Baseball

Marshall took advantage of solid pitching to earn a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State in Huntington, WV this afternoon. The Thundering Herd (25-25) won the opener 6-1, and posted a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, three Marshall pitchers recorded a total of 13 strikeouts and designated hitter Victor Gomez smacked a three-run homer to lead the offense.

Marshall starter Steve Blevins (8-2) allowed five hits and struck out eight in 5.1 shutout innings to earn the win. The Herd led 2-0 when Blevins hit his 10th homer of the season to make it a 5-0 game. The Hornets (16-30) scored their only run in the seventh when Chris Kidd doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Troy Drummond. Jose Sanchez had two of Delaware State’s seven hits. Starter JR McAllister (3-5) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets. He allowed five runs on three hits, while striking out four in six innings of work.

In the nightcap, three Marshall pitchers held the Hornets to six hits. The Herd opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Casamassima accounted for the first run on a solo homer, while Gomez and Jeff Rowley added run-scoring singles in the inning.

Marshall led 4-0 before the Hornets got on the board. Sanchez doubled with one out, and came around to score on a single by Ryne Mailen with two outs in the sixth. Mailen had two of the Hornets’ six hits in the contest.

Delaware State will close out the regular season on Tuesday at Old Dominion in Norfolk, VA. The MEAC Tournament gets underway next weekend at Norfolk State University.
