Aggies Blowout Jackson State

North Carolina A&T dominated the No. 3 team in the blackcollegebaseball.com poll with a 21-4 win over Jackson State at the JSU Baseball Complex.

Jeremy Jones provided power for the Aggies in the series. On Saturday, he went 3-for-4 with three home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored. He was 6-for-12 in the series with four of those hits being home runs. Jones’ new home run prowess is a welcomed addition for the Aggies. He came into the 2006 season with 16 career home runs.

This season he shares the MEAC lead in home runs with teammate C.J. Beatty with 13. Beatty also homered on Saturday, which was his second-career grand slam. Joe McIntyre also contributed by going 4-for-6 and scoring three times. George Hines had a career-high four RBIs.

“We really hit the ball this weekend,’’ said head coach Keith Shumate. “When you look at the kind of competition we were playing and the way we were able to hit the ball, it says a lot about the groove these guys are in right now.”

The Aggies scored 40 runs and compiled 43 hits in the three-game series against the Tigers. Like the other two games in the series, the Aggies offense geared up early on Saturday. Jones opened the scoring by connecting on a 2-1 pitch from Jackson State starter Marquis Zachery. Joe McIntyre continued the rally in the first by singling and stealing second to move into scoring position for Rogers who hit a RBI-singe to right for a 2-0 Aggies lead.

The Aggies kept pounding out hits in the second. Neil Rosser opened the inning by doubling off of Zachery, which ended his day. Nick Mayo bunted to get on, which led to a Hines two-run double for a 4-0 Aggies lead. Jones sent Hines home with a trot as he homered again to give the Aggies a 6-0 lead. Beatty put an exclamation point on things with a grand slam home run in the third.

Jones hit the last of this three home runs in the fifth, a two-run shot off of Jackson State reliever Chris Huggins.

Marquis Frink (5-3) earned the win for the Aggies. He pitched six innings, gave up three earned runs and struck out 10. The Aggies improved to 27-27 on the season.

The Aggies are looking for their first winning season since 1979.

They will play a make-up game against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md., 4 p.m., Monday. The Aggies’ regular-season will come to an end Tuesday against N.C. State in Raleigh before they enter the MEAC Tournament May 15-17 in Norfolk, Va.
