NSU's Boyd Named Black College Baseball Player of the Week

Norfolk State senior John Boyd has been named the Black College Baseball Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.

Boyd, the Spartans’ designated hitter and backup catcher, batted .500 (6-for-12) in NSU’s three games last week. Boyd hit three doubles and drove in 10 runs as the Spartans went 3-0 and increased their win streak to six games, which ties the school Division I record. Boyd drove in three runs each against Coppin State and Liberty, including the go-ahead two-run single against the Flames. He was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI in the win over Virginia State.

In 22 games this season, Boyd is batting .310 with five doubles and team highs of three homers and 27 RBI.

This is the second straight week an NSU player has earned BCB Player of the Week accolades, after catcher Brad Stephenson did so last week.

Also, the Spartans moved up one spot this week from ninth to eighth in the latest BCB Division I Poll. Bethune-Cookman, which hosts NSU for a three-game series this weekend, still tops the poll.
